town to stay between nyc and damariscotta, maine
looking for a place to stay overnite between nyc and damariscotta, me. plan to stay one nite. would like it to be about 1/2 the way. something picturesque, not too rustic. good food. thanks

That's not a bad drive...you could do it in one day, but I'd probably choose the York Harbor Inn on the southern coast of Maine, or somewhere in Portsmouth, NH. It's more than halfway, but next morning you could take a leisurely drive up the coast of Maine instead of hitting any freeway.

It's true that Providence has great amenities these days - but it is not at all on the way from NYC to Maine.
[To get to Maine from NYC, you go up into MA to I-495 North to I-95 North just south of Portsmouth, NH. Detouring to PVD puts you through all sorts of traffic in New Haven, PVD, Boston...]
bboasg, the suggestions for Portsmouth, York, Ogunquit (anything on the bit of Maine coast south of Portland) are good. Cape Elizabeth, adjacent to Portland, also has some cute offerings; it's less "quaint coastal town", but not urban, either...
