Toronto to Mackinac Island?

Hi-
We're going to Niagara Falls, then Toronto,
then thinking about driving to Mackinac Island. What is the best route? Time it takes? Worth it?
Thanks!
Linda

Northern Michigan with Mackinac Island and the beaches on Lake Michigan are delightful and yes, wonderful, worthwhile places to visit. Whether it's worth it for you depends on how much time you have to devote as it's a long drive from Toronto and depends where your final destination is. I would say 4-days absolute minimum for the drive from Toronto if returning to Toronto.

For route from Toronto to Mackinac, I would take 402 to Sarnia and cross over to Michigan at Port Huron. No need to go through the congestion at Detroit.

You can drive from Toronto to Mackinac in a long day.

I would be tempted to follow the shoreline along Lake Huron, going on M-25 and then US 23. It will be 2 or 3 hours, but much more beautiful. And avoid the construction on I-75.

It has been a long time since I have drvien the route north trough Sundbury and crossed at the Soo. Anyone care to comment on that route?

I would prefer to change the route. From Sarnia-Port Huron bridge, I would suggest going on I-75 north. Fast-moving traffic, unless you go on Friday (or a holiday like Labor Day) and return Sunday. If that is your schedule, consider another route. Everyone from Ohio and lower Michigan will be on 75 with their boats and motor homes, and traffic will crawl at those times. Good luck.

Being from Barrie, Ontario - I have been planning this trip as well.

From Toronto, I would suggest driving north through ONTARIO, then return through Michigan. There is lots to see/do enroute north through Ontario as well, then you get to see both routes.
