Tok Alaska to Haines--Pls help

We will be RV'ing Alaska and understanding all will be beautiful, is Tok-Haines drive so much more scenic as to use up 2-3 days touring time. Same question for Seward-Valdez drive. Will appreciate your comments. So far, our plans include looping from Anchorage to Kenai, north to Fairbanks via Glenallen/Paxson, Denali and back to Anchorage. We have 14 days.

Suggest you pick up a copy of The Milepost at a local bookstore. If you are going to drive in Alaska the book is the perfect companion. All that is of interest in terms of scenery is listed with the exact location provided on a map and also in narrative form. Also lists places to stop, restaurants, gas stations, etc. When you use the Milepost you are not driving blind. You will know what is before you, mile by mile.

Rose, if your intent is to go to Haines to get on the southbound ferry, then you need to do it. If your intent is just to look at scenery, then I'd suggest the loop around PW Sound, ferrying back to Seward from Valdez. The drive from Tok to Haines is long and not all that inspiring for much of the way.
What loop from Anchorage to Kenai are you doing? It's not a loop route.

Rose, by all means be sure and get a copy of the Milepost. I would go to Dawson City instead of Tok to Haines.
The road to Haines is not that scenic and there was a lot of construction on this road last summer.

Wanda, I'm really confused. I gather from the original post that Rose needs to return the RV to Anchorage. So are you suggesting that they drive from Fairbanks across the Top of the World to Dawson City and then back across the same highway to Tok and back to Anchorage via Glennallen?

But is it scenic enough to make it worthwhile to drive as far as Kluane Lake to hike in Kluane Park? I saw a bicylist's travellog who said she was amazed at the beauty all along that route.

Maybe loop was the wrong word. We pick up the RV in Anch, then definitely to Kenai area, then backtracking to Palmer, then to Glennallen, north to either Tok or Delta Jct, Fairbanks, Denali and returning RV to Anch. We have the Milepost but I'm looking for personal opinions on Tok-Haines and Glennallen-Valdez drives. We have no particular reason to go to Haines unless the scenery and sights justify that long drive. If it takes constant driving to see everything, we will, but would prefer a more leisurely pace. My husband wants to cruise inside passage in the next few years, so we will save Juneau/Skagway area for that trip. Thanks to all of you for your comments.

Rose, sorry to confuse you, but you would have to backtrack across the top of the world highway to get to Dawson and back to Tok. You can easily go to Valdez and back to Glennallen in one day. The road there is beautiful, if you do this, be sure and visit the museum in Valdez and view the movie on the 64 earthquake. Very interesting, especially after visiting the Kenai Penn. It would take 2 days to get from Tok to Haines, then you either have to backtrack back or take the ferry to Skagway. If you are staying in the Glenallen area you may want to check out the Kennicott and McCarthy area, you may not be able to get into this area with a RV, we did not go there so I have no idea how the roads are like there. Email me if you want and I may be able to help you further.
