I say .50 a drink. At 3.50 a drink, sometimes less on tap, that's 15% - seems about right to me. $1 if I REALLY like the bartender. $2 seems eccessive.

The standard in NYC is $1/drink. Unless the bartender is really hot!

It is really up to the bar tender. Was he good, bad, courteous,.....If fantastic I may levave $3-5 tip total.. If horrible, I leave what ever little change is my pocket. Is it the beginning of my trip? well I may be more generous, at the end I feel my money is running LOW and may be cheaper

Wow! Is $1 or more per drink standard outside of big cities? If so, I have been grossly undertipping at .50 - $1 a drink! Seemes logical since that amounts to 15-20%. My sincere apologies to all those bartenders out there who have served me a drink ......

in manhattan, at least $1 a drink is standard - if you are staying for a while, the bar is busy, and you're not running a tab, make sure to tip well at the beginning (unless YOU are really hot - in other words, I tip a lot for my first drink...)

Hi Shaun,
Yes, it is $1 per drink. Buy 5 drinks and leave $5 etc.

i tip $1/drink but for meals, i double the tax as tip or leave $1 per $5 spent. so if the drink is expensive, maybe tip more.

I am becoming slowly more enlightened! Thanks, Shaun, for asking this question.
But - does it matter if I order a $3 beer vs. a $7 mixed drink? Is it $1 per drink regardless of its price?

At a dive bar I might tip a little less after the first drink if I'm ordering multiple drinks at once. A couple of rounds in, I might tip $1 for two beers, but never less than that. And I'm much more likely to tip lower if I'm getting bottled beer rather than draft.
At nicer bars, watch what the people around you tip. Unless the drink is really complicated or expensive, I think $1 is usually still ok.
