Tip in Hotels?

I can remember when you stayed in a hotel and there was an envelope on the dresser drom the housekeeping staff with some sort of message suggesting that you put a tip in it before you check out. I never see that anymore. Is it expected to to leave a tip for the "Maid"? Curious - do most people?

Yes. It is still expected, but I think people were offended by the tipping envelope being thrusted upon them.

I am not sure about what is appropriate now. Maybe someone else can chime in with that info. I think a dollar p/day p/person???

I wish they still continue with the envelopes... Once a maid did not take the tip - perhaps she thought it wasn't for her? Since then I always leave a note, something like "thank you for cleaning".

I have heard that 1 or 2 dollars per person per day is standard - more if you ask for something special. Less if the service wasn't up to snuff.

I leave 1-3 dollars per day, depending on how nice a hotel it is. I leave it right on the pillow where they can't miss it. More often than not, they return the favor by leaving a few extra mints or candies for me.

Do a search, people.
This topic has been beaten silly to death in the past.
The text search box is your friend.

"Read" is right! There is a bruised, battered, beaten and bloodied post from earlier this year lying around somewhere praying it will never be resurrected. You will get every possible perspective on the subject, and a look into the inner workings, the good the bad and the ugly, of human nature! LOL Read and enjoy or not, but hopefully, this topic can RIP! I honestly don't think there is one new thing that could be added that wasn't said then--15 times, unless someone wants to introduce the angle of the stock market debacle and it's impact on our generosity!

To "xxx":

There are basically two types of question-askers here at Fodor's.
1. People who genuinely want to know the answer to a question.
2. People who simply want to rile up others and start flame wars but don't care about useful info.

For those in camp 1 a simple search of the archives will often provide more info than they need in a matter of seconds, while waiting for answers to trickle in from a new post can take days.

For those in camp 2, what's the difference what any of us say? They don't really care anyway.

So Olive and Read actually have a very valid point. Like it or not.

I must agree here........reed and olive have some deep rooted problems and should be booted off this forum.

Many people come here for the true purpose of the forum----to get advice. Newcomers will not know to do a search, and newcomers is what keeps this place fresh.

If reed and olive have no life, then bring it somewhere else..........we are trying to help fellow travelors here.....go away trolls

You're a true moron Louise.
Look at what you just said....it doesn't even make sense for the intelligent user.

"Many people come here for the true purpose of the forum----to get advice. Newcomers will not know to do a search....we are trying to help fellow travelors here."

Ummmmm....excuse me Louise but what is the best way to help someone learn to use a resource like the internet....to sit next to them and pull up every page they need FOR THEM, or teach them how to do it on their own?

Ever hear the old proverb, "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime?"

Well it sure is a lame attitude to say that since newbies don't know how to do searches you should just spare them this knowledge. Duh! If they don't know how to do a search because they're new, they're infinitely better off if someone tips them off.

You'll make a great parent, I'm sure. Not. And you should learn to spell.

Good grief Louise, what ailed you last night? My post was an attempted bit of humor, obviously unsuccessful in some eyes, about a post that was kicked to death here, and not intended to insult ace or the fact that he hadn't done a search--only to alert him to the fact that if he is truly interested in the answer, there is a past post that covers this ad nauseum.
