Thos. Circle OK in Washington DC?

My husband, 13-year old son and I have reservations at the Residence Inn at Thomas Circle (1199 Vermont Avenue NW) mid-September. The fact that we got a stupendous rate (nearly $100 less than other Residence Inns in the area) makes me slightly suspicious. I read the existing posts on this site but they're all from 2 years ago, and were somewhat mixed. What's the latest scoop on the area? Any info would help. Thanks!

I wouldn't stay there. Many areas in thatat area are "in transition".

I haven't lived in the DC area for two years, but back then Thomas Circle was not great. Did you look up the Residence Inn in any guide books?

Hi mjh and max,
After even more searching around yesterday, I ended up booking an Embassy Suites in Alexandria. They state that they're across the street from the Metro, which will make getting around easy. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply! I really appreciate it and I can't wait to hit town!

Stayed at E.S. in Alexandria last spring. You'll like it - very convenient for the Metro (or Amtrak) but no train noises to be heard at the hotel. Free breakfast to order at the hotel, and just down King St a plethora of nice restaurants. If you are going to Smithsonian area, it's usually quicker to board YELLOW line trains to L'efant Plaza than the BLUE to Smithsonian ... look at maps & decide for yourself.

Though the original question may seem irrelevant now, I would like to say that Thomas Circle south is a safe place to stay. You're not far from K Street, many sites and some fairly excellent restaurants. It used to be that Thomas Circle and nearby L Street were congregating grounds for prostitutes but this is no longer true, especially since the inept, morally corrupt Marion Barry has been out of the mayor's office.

I think Roger overstates things a litte. Thomas Circle is a fine neighborhood for people who are comfortable with big cities. There are still some prostitutes within a block of the Residence Inn (I recently watched a round-up of johns from a neigboring bar) but the are has improved immensely and the Residence Inn actually looks like a nice hotel.
