Hi again alison,
I was out for one of my walks this morning and when I saw the UT tower I thought of you! I really think you might enjoy going on a tour of the tower. The views will be great from the tower and it has a lot of history, although kind of gruesome.
You should probably call ahead for tickets as they only allow tours on the weekends. See this website for info:
http://www.utexas.edu/student/txunio...tours=schedule
They haven't had tours in a few months but they start up again on Sunday, which is perfect timing for you!
I don't know if you're familiar with the history so I'll add this website for you to look at:
http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial/whitman/
It's about a two mile walk from your hotel but you can always take the bus or a taxi if you don't want to walk. If you're a walker like me, two miles is nothing! It's on Guadalupe between 24th and MLK Blvd.
Anyway, I hope you have a great time in Austin and you get to check out all the great suggestions you've gotten so far. Let us know how your trip went and how the wedding was!!

alison, I just read in the paper that downtown will be really busy tomorrow cause it's Texas Independence Day. See this article:

I am coming to Austin in early May and have enjoyed reading all the above posts about the city. If we have a car and can travel outside the city, where do you all recommend we go to experience some interesting day trips?

Well, not out of the city, but since you'll have a car don't miss Mt. Bonnell and Lake Travis for great views. Go to the Oasis on Lake Travis and sit outside on the patio for great view of Lake Travis. Food isn't the greatest but you won't care. Also on Lake Travis is the Iguana Grill if you prefer Tex Mex.
An easy day trip is to go to Fredericksburg. Lots of cute little shops up and down Main Street. Plenty of German food too and beer and wine, which you can drink while you're walking up and down the street! If you're into hiking, I love Enchanted Rock. It's a big pink granite rock sticking out of the ground (called a batholith) and it's a really pretty place. It gets hot though and it fills up early on the weekends.
If you've never been to San Antonio then you've got to go to the Riverwalk. Also, see the Alamo and the Spanish Missions.
If you're into BBQ, drive out to Lockhart. You'll hear about Saltlick on every tourist site there is but I don't think it's that great.
That's all I can think of for now. Let me know your interests if you want more recommendations. You'll love Austin!

tandemfan,
How lucky for you that you are coming here in May! Such a beautiful time of year, the weather is perfect, lakes are hopefully full with our spring rains, and the bats are flying!
With a search of this site, you have probably read of many great activities, hikes, and vistas.
One place that rarely gets mentioned is Hamilton Pool. Just a short drive from where I live, it's a great escape into nature, with a beautiful cliff, cave, river, at the end. Especially in May, when the water should be flowing! A couple hours is all you'll need, so you can combine that with a trip to Enchanted Rock, Pedernales Falls Park, or even as far as Fredericksburg for the evening.
Also, on the way to Fredericksburg, you'll pass through Johnson City, home of the LBJ Ranch, where they have tours. Very nice.
And I second AustinTraveler's recommendation of Lockhart for BBQ over Salt Lick. Kruez's Market is top notch - their ribs and brisket are the best! (Of course, everyone has a favorite.) No forks or sauce here, so be prepared to eat with your fingers!
Welcome, y'all!

Ok, I live by the Salt Lick, so I may be partial but there is more to the experience than the quality of the BBQ. It is family-style, BYOB and set in beautiful Hays County. Beats Lockhart hands down on ambiance and the drive. I am in the minority in that it is my favorite to eat, too...but I guess I am not a BBQ expert. You can make a day trip out of it and visit Wimberely which is about 45 mins from downtown Austin (20 minutes from the Salt Lick). It is a quaint little town with lots of shops and fun things to see.
Have a great trip!

just want to tell y'all what a great time I had in austin. Went to farmer's market for breakfast taco saturday morning and told the guy I had read about him on the web....he was so excited! Couldn't believe Whole Foods -- ate some sort of fresh-baked pastry stuffed with bananas, peanut butter and chocolate (a stromboli, i think) that was out of this world. Walked all around the capitol and to UT and even walked down 6th street at night. Got to South Congress area for a great walk the last day. Wonderful city and thanks every so much for your ideas. Almost made it on the UT Tower tour on Sunday, but am saving that for "next time." thanks again.
