I have asked about Florida...and we are still looking - but that place is pretty popular ; ) and also recovering so finding somewhere is tougher than I thought. So in not givign up...I have added other spots and i am curious of the opinions out there. We are still a family of 4 adults and one baby now travelling in May...
New options are the Boston (but with a baby???) Cape Cod area...and Virginia...we want some time to relax and stare in brain dead fashion at large bodies of water...maybe sand under foot or bottom...but my husband and father love history - battle stuff...Mum and I love antiques etc...baby well he really just loves to make noise - so what do we do? Where do we stay? Help? Thanks!!

Could you fill us in on what you're looking for? I answered a question about which airport to fly into for the west coast, but otherwise have no idea what your objective is. Are you looking for a rental for 4 plus baby in May? There are tons of options in Fla. if that's your first choice. Give us some more details on budget, needs etc.
When you say "...that place is pretty popular..." are you talking about a specific accomodation or ???

It will be cold to swim in May in CapeCod. As a matter of fact, it will be cold in Va to swim in may.
Maybe a condo in South Carolina (Hilton head) is a great family area. The water should be warm then. We rented from Island Getaway and they gave us a great condo on the beach. The condo also has a pool area. I believe we stayed in the Windsor court. Savannah GA is where you would fly in. This may have some historical aspects for husband and son. There is also Kiawah Island off SC. This is right near Charleston which is a very cute town and would offer quaint city with history and charm. I believe you can get a nice condo on the beach there also.

Wow you guys are great and speedy!!
Ok - initially I provided inadequate info. I agree - so here we go again...
If we go to Florida we are flying. If we go to VA or MA we are flying, driving or train...whichever is the best combination of affordable and convenient.
Our budget is still uncertain - but in the area of less than $2000 per couple?? Eek - does everyone gasp in horror and then laugh??? Is this possible? Condo's in Fla. are pretty well booked was my initial meaning, and we have explored options of Bonita Beach, Sanibel, Captiva that area...but it is pricey and busy...but we liked the family beach getaway idea. I hadn't considered somewhere like Hilton Head - but I have so allowed myself to be limited to the beloved Caribbean that I am learning - I will definetly consider it with condo's on the beach.
We would swoon over swimming in the ocean but we can handle it not happening. Our primary concern is keeping the budget mangeable...getting some rest and seeing new and exciting places...we could travel here in our fab. country - but we really want to try somewhere different and meet people with a different experience, and the US has so much to offer!! And reasonably close?? I am basically in Toronto...
Now - too much information eh? Ive lost half of you...Thanks again for your help!!

Umm. Still I'm lost. Where are you from? UK? Canada? For how long are you going and is $2000/couple including airfare and food or just for accomdodation or ???
I am much more familiar with the east coast of Fla. but I have to say there are sooooo many condo options and May is not really high season. If you're not looking for luxe, there should be a number of options.

Hi I just checked Island Getaway. For a two bedroom villa on the ocean in the Windsor court building, I think we stayed in 3205, it will be 2095.00 Us dollars. Each bedroom is separted by a living rm. One has a king and one has twin beds. There was a small kitchen and dining area and a washer and dryer. The sheets and towels are all are provided. You would need to bring beach towels or buy cheap ones. You could each get your own one bedroom condo. Didn't check that price. We stayed here in June 2003 and the water was so warm (about 85-90F)Even I went in. You can rent bikes and go all over the island. Savannah GA is the closest city to fly into. You would need to rent a car and drive about 40 minutes. Rentals are generally weekly. Hope I helped.

Girl you rock - thanks so much for your research...we will look into Windsor court as rental...the price is good for the four of us...and we are hoping to go at the end of May so it sounds like the water may work out. thanks a lot!!
McL: We are from Canada...I mentioned the Toronto area so the driving is a possibility if it cuts down on cost...doesn't always though...$2000 is really for everything. And I have been looking in the areas of Florida mentioned and i was actually surprised that they are not as accessible as I thought - but maybe I need to get a second look at that...So the search goes on....thanks again for all the assistance!

We stayed here last year for a month and loved it. You can get a two bedroom condo oceanfront for well within your budget. They are very nice units with fully equiped kitchens.http://www.islandinnresort.com/rooms-rates.html It is in Treasure Island close to St Pete, Tampa lots of stuff to do or just veg on the beach.

The Island Inn is fine. Also in Treasure Island is the Thunderbird, and the Best Western Sea Castle (only agree to room on the Gulf, not on the Intracoastal). These are suites, or at least studios, large hotels but not huge. There is lots to do in Tampa/St. Pete, lots of history in this area which dates to the 1880's (well, for Florida that's really really old!)
Did you find anything near St. Augustine? St. Augustine Beach? This area has lots of history dating to pre-American Revolution.
Some less popular FL places would be New Symrna, Flagler Beach on east coast.

Charleston is a FANTASTIC idea. The area is rich in culture, southern heritage, and antiques. You have easy access to beaches up and down the coast, Edisto Island is a good location and not awfully expensive.
I just did a search on this website:
http://www.edistorealty.com/rental/
for the last week of May for two bedrooms+, six occupants and even found one house (beach walk location) with five bedrooms for less than $1500 for a week. That's a steal! There were condos also!
Good luck!

I almost forgot to advise you to check VRBO.com for Treasure Island. Look for anything at the Sunset Chateau or at Islands END (not Inn). These are condos. The Islands End is nicer but Sunset Chateau is a better location. This is a great beach spot, Sunset Beach, at the southern tip of Treasure Island. You can walk to restaurants from the Sunset Chateau.

I didn't find Hilton Head to be a money money money type place. I thought it was a relaxing family type place. Not a lot of nightlife. (That may have just been us). We enjoyed it. Also, Charleston is a quaint city that would have history and shopping. So, let us know where you decide!
