You can easily do the Road to Hana in a day.
Sunrise at Haleakala is spectacular! It is cold and you have to get up early but it is worth it. Before the sun comes up, you will see tons of stars. Then, the sun will slowly start to come through the clouds and the colors are incredible! It is a breathtaking experience that should not be missed.

It's interesting our varying tastes. Of my multiple trips to Maui, I have stayed multiple nights in Hana on 3 different trips.
I only went to Haleakala on our first trip for sunrise and never went back. Perhaps next time I will try it at sunset.
On my 3rd or 4th visit, I finally made it to Iao Needle which was a nice side trip to our day, but again nothing I felt the need to return to.
And the west coast drive - done it every trip! Love it.
