The Clift

Checking out hotels for my 2 night stay in S.F. Does anybody have any reports about The Clift since it's been renovated and taken over by Ian Schrager Hotels.

I have not stayed @ the Clift but have stayed at other Schrager hotels in NYC such as the Hudson or Royalton. All the rooms are usually small but atmosphere is trendy.

Best to research this carefully - you may want to use the search function of this forum (works best when you don't specify a state location in search). I recall reading some very negative things and even recall something to the effect that Schrager may have unloaded this property already(?). I was in SF recently and stayed at the Triton. Wonderful property with a friednly staff and great rooms. Doesn't have the sleek elegance and the oh so beautiful people but if you're looking for a boutique property with plenty of style and comfy but well designed rooms... it's a great choice.

josh,
Was just in SF 2 weeksends ago and checked out the Redwood Room at The Clift. Gorgeous! If the rooms are anywhere near as nice as the club, nice place!
As nancy said "trendy". So trendy, no sign was outside to tell you where it is???
Owen, based on your rec, Mrs Kal stuck her head in the door of the Triton during a UnSq shopping break and told me later she may like to give it a try.

i hope you had no problem having drinks in The Redwood Room because at some other hotels in the group like Mondrian's Sky Bar or The Hudson Bar you have to be a guest or way cool just to get by the velvet rope.

Kal - if she's in the neighborhood again she might even ask to seea room. the public area was nice enough but small and didn't have the impact that the public area of a typical Schrager property would have but it's more than made up for by the rooms. I"ve stayed in the Paramount (NYC) and felt that the Triton rooms were far better - no comparison. That said, the lobby of the Paramount is really cool and worth seeing even if you're not staying there.

Thx Owen. We have no prob. with small rooms. When we stay at the St Francis, we request the older part. Same with The Powell.

Charles, As I mentioned in my SF trip report.."what velvet rope?" I guess the 4-5 hrs I spent at Shanghai Kelly's made me invisible, bullet-proof, very witty and "sooo-ave and de-boner" so they let me in? Or maybe they thought I was the ladies body guard?
