The Breakers Trip Report

Thank you to all that helped me plan my trip. Here is my trip report. Please feel free to ask me any questions...

We just got back from The Breakers and loved everything about it. We were quite shocked at some of the negative reviews. Not sure where those folks were staying since everything about it was wonderful!

First, the hotel itself is beautiful. You really take a step back in time to the early 1900’s. It is not for everybody but our group (2 families with total 3 kids) loved it. I was concerned that the staff would be snotty, but they were completely unpretentious…except at the spa. They were nice but definitely had more of an attitude than anywhere else in the hotel. Also, the staff was very attentive. Coffee and orange juice served immediately at breakfast and the waitress came over right away when we were seated under our umbrella, whether on the beach or the pool. We ate at L’Escalier for my husband’s birthday and they were laughing and joking with us. A really great staff!

Our room was 460 square feet and very comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean in our room and on the grounds. They changed the sheets everyday and put chocolates on our pillows every night. They even dropped a note in your room every evening telling you the next day’s temperatures and possible activities.

This hotel is perfect for families. I saw some younger (and older) couples without children, but it is definitely geared more towards families. Almost every single staff person, whether in the dining room, on the beach or in the children’s center took the time to talk to my 3-year old. The kid’s center (attached to the Italian Restaurant) was a dream come true. We ate our dinners while our kids had a great time playing! I don’t think I would enjoy it as a couple without kids because there were kids running and shouting everywhere!

The food and drinks were very expensive, but I had researched carefully, so I was expecting to spend $$$. Hamburgers run around $15, Lobster Sandwiches around $25 – but everything I ate at the hotel ranged from very good to excellent. We ate at L’Escalier (their signature restaurant), the Beach Club and the “Tiki Bar” near the North pool (not sure what the real name of that place was – they grilled hamburgers, etc.).

To reduce our costs we did get a cooler and buy beer at the Publix and we also ate dinner at City Place (a mall within a few miles that cost $8.00 in cab fare). We also ate at The Seafood Bar. The bar is an aquarium that is really neat, especially for keeping little ones busy while you have a cocktail and/or dinner!

They have a wonderful breakfast buffet that our travel agent was able to have included. That saved us a lot of money! It was about $50 (including tax/gratuity) everyday – so that was a huge savings. They also did not charge for our kids – 3, 4 and 5 years old.

The beach was “kelpy” due to the reef that lies just beyond the hotel that you can apparently see lots of beautiful fish (we didn’t snorkel or scuba). There is lots of kelp and shells on the beach and in the water, but if you are not looking for pristine white beaches, it will be fine. It did not bother us at all.

We did travel on the off-season, which is a lot less expensive than going in-season and a lot less crowded. The hotel was at 25% capacity, which made the whole experience very relaxed.

Could you specify which Breakers you're referring to?
At first I thought you meant The Breakers at Cedar Point, also a Victorian Resort on the shores of Lake Erie but I dont think that's it.

(just an FYI, there is only one main United States board so even if you posted it under a specific state it will go to the main board)

Glad you had a good time.

wanderluster, Tango is referring to THE Breakers Resort in Palm Beach. The original, the top banana (same name as the famous Newport mansion).

Great report Tango, LOVE the Breakers. Like to be there right now in fact.

Resort casual at The Breakers is Lilly Pulitzer. That is the birthplace of the line you know!

And I thought of the hotel in Waikiki (until I read the 1900's part).
