I'll play along:

wear a formal gown/cocktail dress to a Broadway show
hang a purse on the back of a chair
wear pastels/applique/Christmas sweaters
gawk at celebrities
pull out a map on the street

and this one may be dating me, but ...

call the PanAm building the MetLife building!

I will pull out a map so I know where I am going and I will gawk at celebrities if I am lucky enough to see one, but never would I hang my bag on the back of my chair, not even in my hometown. I remember going to New York and being told not to wear my rings, never go to Central Park and of course not use the subway. I assume things are different now.

sf - it's quite a scandal. The city has spent millions, literally, on new signs. Think of the teachers that could have been hired with that money. In protest, it will always be the Triboro to me!

Well, not in my experience. When boarding a bus, and waiting a few seconds to check the balance, we're pushed and shoved and have learned that "ExCUSE me, PULease" means get going already!

Re airports:

Calling EWR "Newark Liberty." PANY&NJ spent millions on those signs, too.

I go down to Union Square all the time to buy eggs, bread and greens and to drop in at the Strand.

Maybe the poster was talking about the southern end of US, where vendors from various other places come into town and set up tables with souvenirs, T shirts etc.

others:
-Run red lights while riding a bike.
-Spread coats, newspapers, bags across groups of 3, 4, or 5 seats at the movies to save them for friends.
-Sunbathe in a bikini in Central Park.
-Show up at the good bagel shop on a weekend morning in pjs with a good coat thrown over them.
-Block Subway doors
-Exclaim "Unbelievable!" repeatedly on the subway at rush hour while pushing and shoving along with the rest of the herd
-Avoid taking flash snapshots of friends while riding a bus or subway.
-Suffer fools lightly

How about this:

Glance at the timetables at bus stops and actually think that the numbers correspond to the time that the bus will show up

LOL, be engaged in secretly planning to riot when the fares jump to 2.50, or become a stile-jumper!

PS,
I don't think the title of this thread is right, it should be "Non-tourists".
I like tourists and have met many wonderful ones visiting my city!

Giggling at Ekscrunchy. Yeah, who is always scrutinizing those signs and then looking at their watches anyway?

Yeah, last time I drove out of New York I almost got lost looking for the sign for the Triboro Bridge. Fortunately I figured it out in time.

How about:

Go to a Broadway show.

Go above 14th St for any reason.

I'm a tourist whenever I go to New York, which is fairly often, and I'd like to admit to doing the following which were mentioned above:

Go to Union Square

Hial a cab by raising one finger (maybe not so meekly)

Wave at any cab going by - I had no idea about the lights, so I could use some instruction on this one

Look up

Pull out a map on the street

Go to Times Square for fun - not for fun exactly, but to me, Times Square at night is one of the more impressive sights I have seen

Worn jeans with sneakers

I'll try to do better in the future.

As for styles of dress, I have to tell you I've seen some pretty hideous outfits in New York, and I really don't believe that they were all worn by tourists.

There are lights on top of every cab.
When the lights are off, the cab is occupied.
When the center light only is on, the cab is available.
When the outer lights only are on, the cab is off duty.
When all the lights are on, the cab is off duty.

Now someone explain why available cabs pass people on the street. No peripheral vision? It drives me crazy.

Well, the "off duty" lights are misleading. Hale them anyway bec. sometimes they pull over and you can discuss your destination w/ them. If your destination and their destination are in the same direction they will take you.
