Just wanted to let everyone know how my trip went. I forgot to bring the information everyone provided so we missed out on some stuff.
Texas was ok, we did not enjoy ourselves as much as we have on our other vacations. There was not much to do.
We landed in SA and drove straight to Austin. That night was the UT vs. OK State game. It was cool to be in that atmoshpere, everyone in town was into it. Didn't go to the game though. There were people in our hotel who drove from Oklahoma. We visited the Stevie Ray Vaughn Memorial, spent the day in and around Fredericksburg and Climbed the Enchanted Rock. In SA we had a light dinner at Mi Tierra (yuck). We visited the Alamo, had lunch on the Riverwalk and drove out to Shiner for a brew tour. There was not very much to do in SA. It took about15-20 minutes to tour the Alamo. We then flew to South Padre for a couple of days. The weather was very nice the day we arried so we got to sit around on the beach for a while. The next day it was windy and cold because of storms rolling in. We spent the day visiting the sea turtles at Sea Turtle, Inc. and then drove back out to Harlingen to do some of the "top 100 things to do in Harlingen". What a waste of time, we picked about 6 things to do and only one was worth it. We then drove down to Brownsville and around back to SP. We then spent the evening at SP Brewing drinking, eating pizza and playing trivia. It was an ok trip, don't think I'll be going back to Texas anytime soon.
We might have actually had a better time in and around El Paso, Amarillo, and or Lubbock. Austin and SA were just too much like any other city.
Best seafood I have ever had: South Padre Brewing Company!
Thanks for all the help.
We are headed to Tampa in January for a few days..........never been there either.

It's too bad that you listened to the country boys and girls when they told you to avoid the big cities.
Half of the people in Texas live in either the Dallas or Houston metros.
Your experience would have been far better if you were in Houston-Galveston and especially Dallas-Fort Worth.

I think what you are probably feeling is that after all that wait and expense it was over so soon.
If I had seen this thread earlier, I would have probably suggested Dallas-Austin-SA-Houston-Dallas loop. That trip would have combined the urban excitement of big Texan cities with the laid back feel of the smaller cities of Austin and SA. And you would have seen more of Texan countryside. I think that would have made the trip more fulfilling. It seems that you were more interested in things to do than sightseeing. In that sense, bigger cities of Dallas and Houston offer a lot more to do than the smaller ones you saw. You can pretty much cover Austin or SA in a day.
Austin is a pretty city but, compared to Dallas and Houston, I found it to be pretty laid back and sleepy. By the way, you can't really experience Austin until you have seen the western and northwestern part of the city which, in my opinion, are the most beautiful parts of the city. The hills of Hill Country with Spanish-style and classic Hill Country homes perched on them, the lake in between and the Oasis restaurant overlooking the lake all make the city rather unique (and not like any other city as you say).
