They sell international phone cards in many places - gas stations, convenience stores, even food markets. I have never used one but am told they work just fine from a pay or other phone.

PS - my daughter is going to Norway next week. I never was able to find out how she could call home from Norway, but the teacher/tour leader promises to get them to an internet cafe so they can email their nervous parents.

Thanks for offering Norway info, but she does not have a lot of choices to make about what to see - it is a group tour for 40 13-year-olds for 11 days, includes Sweden, Denmark, Norway - with the most time in Norway. It is a group from her school and the 5 teachers lead a trip to someplace in Europe once a year. They are doing some kayaking and glacier hiking.

We got her some local currency before she left - hope you find US dollar less confusing than 3 different kinds of Kroners/Kronors, each with a different exchange rate.

Sister's husband called from the Rolling Stones concert in Berlin yesterday from his cell phone to her cell phone which at the time was in N. CA. That seemed to work out ok. Do you have a cell phone? Check with your carrier about getting a plan tha twould work for this.

Jannik,

You can purchase phone cards in many locations here. The cheapest one I've found for international calls is an AT&T card sold in WalMart. You can buy them in small denominations and use your credit card to recharge them.

I have no idea on the rates to Norway but I know the rate to the UK is about 20 cents per minute. If you'd like me to check it out, let me know.

So where are you coming to in the U.S.? Hopefully some place fun.

Okay, I'm curious....... what areas did you decide to visit in the south: Birmingham, Savannah, Lexington, etc?

Jannik, where are you going? If you are coming to NYC, there are some pay phones on the street that charge 25 cents for 1-2 minutes. They mostly cater to South America/ Carribean Islands, but they post rates on the phone for other places as well (but the first 2 minutes are usually 25 cents). If it's a quick check in call, then this may be a way to go. If you can't find one of these phones, you can buy a phone card with cheap rates to many foreign countries in all kinds of shops.

Message: retired teacher::
we had to change the plan a bit, because of the price, we had to pay about 400-500 us dollar more if we went to alabama and georgia,(i dont know why,,,, so i have to wait to next year to do that, but thanks anyway), we have now all the tickets, booked hotels, and have a car for 12 days.we start with 5 days in nyc, and fly down to new-orleans(5 days), get the car and drive up mississippi where we will have 2 nights(we dont have a hotel for these nights)then we take 2 nights in memphis, and 3 nights in nashville, before we drive up to a small town in kentucky called bardstown where we stay for one night, and from there up to lexington where we take 3 nights, and fly from there back to nyc where we will end our trip.

May I suggest stopping in either Natchez or Vicksburg Mississippi on your way north to Memphis. Natchez has many lovely Antebellum homes (pre US Civil War) that were built by rich plantation owners with money from their cotton and/or tobacco crops. Vicksburg also has a few Antebellum homes, but was also the site of the siege of Vicksburg during the Civil War. But whatever you decide to do, please get off the interstate highway system for a time. You can't get a true feeling for America without seeing its small towns as well as its great cities. Enjoy your trip!

hi teacher.
we have talked about vicksburg and natchez,so i think it will be them..and we will try to stay so much of the interstate as we can,cause we will try to see as much as we can of the landscape,and the small towns, but we dont have that long time in mississippi, so perhaps we have to take the interstate for a while.sorry we did not make georgia and alabama this time, but i can try that next year..thanks for all the help you have been giveing me.
