Nokia ATT Cell Phone in Europe and US
Hi all -

I'm trying to find a Nokia phone from AT&T that works in the US and then I can get it to work in Europe when I travel. Do any of you know any particular models that would do this? Not strictly a 'travel' question, but kind of. Thanks in advance!

The phone you need is a "Tri-band" so it can work on both the European and American systems. Motorola sells one that I have found works for me. If for some reason, you don't get a phone in time, lots of major airports in Europe can rent you one while you're here.
Hope this helps.
Melissa

While shopping for a new phone and provider recently, I was told by the sales rep at ATT that all of their phones will work in both US and Europe without modification. Of course you will be charged some pretty outlandish rates to use a US based phone in Europe or elsewhere. I do not know if this is true or not.

Well, I have AT&T for my mobile service, and I can tell you that my Panasonic phone (thrown in free with my service plan) did NOT function when I was in Scotland recently. (I could turn it on, but got a "no service" message.)

However, I also did not inquire about use overseas prior to my trip, as I was sure that the cost would be outrageous. It's possible that the phone could be "unlocked" for use in other countries, however, I'm fairly certain that the model I own is not a tri-band, so I think not.

Some tri-band phones (like my Motorola T280) need to be manually reconfigured to work on the different GSM frequencies used between US and other countries. It's often buried in the "settings" menu somewhere, so its best to familiarise yourself with the procedure in advance.

i have at+t world connect service from phoenix, az. you need two phones, when you turn off your local phone, and turn on your euro phone when landing, all your calls get forwarded to the euro phone. from your local calling area you just dial the number normaly, no country codes or anything. also, t mobile is now offering a phone that works in the US or europe, just one phone necessary. at+t's service worked great, much better than the cell phones i have rented .

You will need a tri-mode GSM phone to work both places. You can purchase a pay-as-you-go SIM in Europe to use but your phone will have to be unlocked. Tmobile is supposed to be pretty good about giving you the unlock codes while AT&T does not like to do so. Or you can buy your tri-mode phone through ebay or a vendor who sells phones which are not locked to a particular carrier.

I travel in Europe quite frequently myself, and I just bought a Noikia 6310i phone from AT&T. This is a tri-band phone which will work in the US, Europe and Asia (except Japan). For an extra $3 a month, you can add "roaming international access" to your existing AT&T plan which will allow you to make and receive calls in Europe. The toll charges are actually not that high, about 15 cents a minute for the UK, check the AT&T wireless website for their other toll charges for Europe. The phone lists for $149, but either it was on sale or due to my corporte discount, I was able to purchase it for $89. That is a fantastic price for this phone.
