Thank you everyone for your suggestions. We've decided on The Tahitian Inn Resort in Treasure Island, mostly because they had a room available.
Our two days here are the start of a vacation that includes a cruise to the Western Caribbean. I'll post a trip report when I get back!
Thanks again!

It's been three years, but we stayed at the Inn on the Beach in Pass-a-Grille and loved this part of the beach -- the cleanest, quietest stretch of SPB by far. No restaurants w/in walking distance; however, the units all have kitchens.

We had reservations last year at the Tihitian and upon checking in, we checked out. The room was old and outdated, very worn. We had specified a oceanfront room and although that is what we got it was a hike and a half to the water's edge. They charged us for the day but we did not care. We really hated it and spent the rest of the day looking for accomodations. That's when we found the Island Inn on TI and loved it.

We have stayed at two different places on Treasure Island right near Johns Pass. The first is the Buccaneer which is a relatively small hotel, but has been redone in the past 8-10 years and is right on the beach. We have also stayed at the Holiday Inn on treasure Island - bigger and more expensive but might be more likely to have rooms. Have a wonderful trip. Go to the Hurricane at the very end of St. Pete Beach - wonderful grouper sandwiches, key lime pie and rum runners!

Hi,
I'm surprised and concerned by these bad reviews of the Tahitian Resort. It's gotten good reviews on Trip Advisor (and the website says it's "newly remodeled.") I think it's too late for us to find another place so I think we're just going to take the chance. I'll let you know how we fare.
Thank you again for all your help and suggestions!

A small motel in TI, Riotel Island Resort is part of a Canadian group. We will be there from Michigan March 5th through 13th - picked it for price and availability. Across the street from the beach. My folks who are in Palmetto checked it out for us last week and said it seemed quite nice. www.riotel.com i think.
