Tamales in New Orleans
I've heard about that wonderful Mexican food, meat tamales, being widely sold and very popular in the New Orleans area. Can anyone please tell me about this delicacy and where it can be found in the New Orleans area? Thank you.

I'll be interested in the response to this question, too, as I've been going to NO for decades and have never heard of any Mexican food there. In fact, my advice to you would be to stick with the food that makes New Orleans famous and save Mexican food for San Antonio and/or Santa Fe.

I don't think tamales are "widely sold" or "very popular" in New Orleans but a local brand is Manuel's Hot Tamales. I've seen them sold on street corners by vendors similar to Lucky Dog, but it's been a few years since I've noticed it. You can buy Manuel's at some local groceries or (I just discovered) order online at http://www.manuelshottamales.com/

Hot Tamales a NO delicacy? Don't get me wrong I love Hot Tamales, my grndmother use to make great homemade ones, but they are a very ommon food you can buy anywhere. I eat them regularly in Kentucky. I can't see going to NO to eat this unusual delicacy (not)

OMG! What a blast from the past. I am from Nawlins & we loved Manuel's. There's just something about buying food from a street vendor that makes it xtra specially yummy! Any fellow yats remember Takee Outee next door to Pat O's - tasted best on the way OUT of Pat O's for some reason!

I remember Takee Outee - and you're right - you had to put some hours in a Pat O's for it to taste its best.
I've seen Manuel's around town, but I've never tried them.
There is some excellent Mexican food in New Orleans - Superior Grill and Taqueria Corona to name two places we go regularly. Juan's Flying Burrito also has good food.

Wow, I had forgot all about Takee Outee. That must have been the most god-awful chinese food of all time. You really did have to be drunk to eat it, and then you scoffed it down like there was no tomorrow. They still have a Manuel's stand at Canal and Carrollton, but no more little stands. Second the vote for Taqueria Corona.
