Great little town IMO, very well kept, clean, compact with some nice covered bridges around.
Naysayers claim it's too 'plastic' feeling, and I can see where they're coming from, but I still like visiting.
The Woodstock Inn is the best place in town, and is beautiful from the outside.
I'm a luxury hotel nut and I was disappointed with the quality of the room. Not that it was unacceptable or anything, I was just expecting a bit more. It was nice, maybe a 7 on a scale of 10, but nothing overly memorable (again, highly dependant on where you've been before. Some people rave about it I'm sure). Lawns are very pretty and surroundings as well.
The restaurant was decent but not 'special' IMO. There are some better places in the town (which is steps out the door).
But overall, Woodstock is definitely worth a visit.
Now if you really want to splurge, stay at Twin Farms just up the road. (I haven't, but have read about it several times). The utmost in rural luxury. Rooms start at $1000 a night. (But hey, that includes food after all!!). Very popular with lots of celebs. Next time I stay there I'll report back.

Similar feelings about the town (never stayed at the resort , though I have warmed up in front of the lobby fire several times). Personally I enjoy a
'bigger' town after driving through many many tiny picturesque towns in Vermont with only one , virtually identical to all others, general store. It is in a beautiful area with streams, mountains etc nearby (and don't miss driving over to see Queechee Gorge if the weather is good)There are many more reasonable inns in the general vicinity that have some deluxe rooms if you're interested in a
smaller place but still more luxury than a place like Twin Farms (i'll save that for my next, rich, life...) Except for peak foliage season (which must be sold out completely for weekends this year), You should be able to get very nice rooms in most places for around $200 night.

There is no 'Woodstock Resort' that I know of in Woodstock Vt. As mentioned above, you might be thinking of the Woodstock Inn, a large upscale hotel in the middle of Woodstock Vt. Since I livenear by, I've never stayed there, but I've been inside to warm up by the fireplace. It is a very pleasant place, in a very cute, touristy Vermont village (lots of out of state cars). For a more rural upscale inn I would reccommend the Marshland Farm at Quechee. A very beautiful setting about 10 minutes outside Woodstock. Don't miss a visit to Billings Farm Museum for a real interesting afternoon, and a hike up Mt. Tom (very easy!).
