Surprise getaway to Mendocino...hotel advice needed!
I am trying to plan a 3 night getaway to Mendocino, but am having some difficulty choosing a place to stay. The room I was interested in at the Brewery Gulch is not available, but they do have a few rooms left (none have a soaking tub, but a couple have decks). However, I'm concerned about walking distance to town. I am also looking at the MacCallum House, which has plenty of availability and is right in town, but mixed reviews on trip advisor. Suggestions? This weekend will be a Christmas gift so I'm looking for something great.

Try www.mendocinopreferred.com and look at the Cove and Pacifica rooms. They are right across the highway from Brewery Gulch Inn plus it's an oceanFRONT property with views across Mendocino Bay to the Village of Mendocino. Both have Jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces and decks, and are VERY nice.

I should have added that though Cypress Cove is across the highway from Brewery Gulch Inn, it is not ON the highway. You drive perhaps a quarter of a mile off the highway to the property that, as mentioned, is on the actual ocean instead of across Hwy One from it as is the Brewery Gulch.

You can't go wrong in Mendocino. Check out Alegria as well, we are staying there in 4 weeks. Yes, it's a mile to town from BGulch Inn. We stayed in the Heron room, which was lovely. Didn't miss the soaking tub, it actually had the best view of the ocean, IMO. The breakfasts were great, cocktail hour was awesome, too. They really go all out, management is wonderful. We are in good shape, we hiked into town every morning. You can take the road across the way and avoid traffic for the first 1/2 mile. Even if you have to drive and park, it's no big deal. I liked the solitude at BGulch- we had a herd of deer grazing every morning behind the Inn. It's a peaceful place. We also liked the Stanford Inn and Glendeven, which is a little bit down the way. Mendocino has to be one of the most romantic places I've ever seen...enjoy!!

Another possibility is for you to say in Elk, which is about 20 miles south of Mendocino.
We've stayed at Harbor House a number of times - though the price has gone up dramatically in recent years. Still, it's an amazing location, the house itself is a landmark, and the food is terrific. If you've got the bucks, it's a first-rate romantic destination.
I hear good things about Griffin House, just a couple hundred yards south of Harbor House....Oh yeah, there's an Irish pub there with Guinness on tap. That's always good....
