I'll be in NYC next week with little free time. Some of that free time is on Sunday after about 3:30. I'll be on my own (I like to think I'm a middle-aged woman rather than a senior) and would love suggestions on what to do. I'll be staying in Times Square and probably don't want to stray too far.

You haven't bothered to mention your interests.

Go for a walk through Central Park and visit The Met either before of after your walk.

I'm fairly open, interest-wise. Love music (shows, easy listening, jazz), shopping, travel, books, art, architecture. Have some free hours on Tuesday and thought I'd go to the Met then. It closes at 5:30 on Sunday so not much time. I'm there to participate in some performances and the first one is Friday night in Central Park.

Any dinner/music venues in TS area that sounds like I might enjoy?

If the weather is nice, walking the Highline is delightful.

Check out the reading room (gorgeous) and the special exhibits (fascinating) at the main brand of the NY Public Library. Spend some time in Bryant Park. Walk a couple of blocks uptown and visit ToTR - to see NY in the daylight and at sunset.

Or you might want to quickly check out MoMA - open until 5:30 on Sundays.

If you can get through before 3, then you can see a Broadway show. Otherwise (and if the weather cooperates), you can spend a delightful few hours walking the Highline.

Had never heard of the Highline, but looks interesting. Planning to walk around Chelsea and Greenwich Saturday afternoon, so will probably catch some of that then. Grand Central looks interesting. Says they have the guide on an app for iPhone.

Library not open on Sunday, but do plan to visit it when I have a couple of free hours.

OK, I'm a Floridian, so please don't make fun--or not much, anyway--but everything I've heard about Central Park is that it's not that safe, especially for a woman alone. Are y'all contradicting that impression? None of the guided tours are on Sunday late enough for me. Not recommended on my own, I guess.

I did notice on the Conservancy's calendar, they didn't list our concert at Naunburg Grandstand at 6:00 Friday. If anyone is around, I'll be the only female alto sax player! You could also get a free ticket to our Carnegie Hall concert on Monday night!

Please note if you say you want to want to walk around Greenwich, someone will send you to a tony town in CT. In local parlance, it is The Village, West Village, or Greenwich Village, not Greenwich. Not sure how that arose.

Contradicting your impressions of Central Park.

I stand corrected IMD.

I think you'd be fine walking around Central Park -- you'll see many families out and people just enjoying the park.

Actually Central Park is the single safest area of the entire tri-State area. You can check the crime statistics if you don't believe me. And it will be totally crowded on a Sunday afternoon. I often walk with my dog in the far northern reaches in the quieter parts, and there are always families picknicking. That's not to say there isn't a stray incident of crime in the park, even during the day. But at 3:30 on a busy Sunday ... in the places you are likely to go, you will be more annoyed by crowds than criminals.

I would not walk across the park alone at 3 in the morning.

But during daylight hours, especially on a weekend, the park will be mobbed and your greatest risk is being run down by one of those tripod strollers pushed by a jogging parent.

This PA suburbanite will agree with the NYers above...I would not hesitate to walk through Central Park alone, in fact I highly recommend it!

The Israel Day parade will be happening and you might run into a performance or two in the Park -- After 8 years of being stuck in traffic on HOHO buses on parade day, I now enjoy marching with my synagogue.

You are probably tied up on Monday before your Carnegie Hall concert but if you want to join a group tour of the Park around 2:45, the details are here somewhere (You will have plenty of company in the Park on your own on Sunday)

Central Park felt very safe for me- woman enjoying the 13th anniversary of my 29th birthday.

Thanks for all the advice. Had a great time. Rehearsal and then Concert in Central Park Friday evening after arrival. Had great audiences and beautiful weather!

For my free day on Saturday, I wandered through the park by the river, around Chelsea, including a local outdoor craft show and around The Village Had lunch at La Botega Cafe at the Maritime Hotel at 9th Ave and 16th St.http://www.themaritimehotel.com/labottega.php I had walked past earlier in the morning and the above-street patio and blue and white striped umbrellas just screamed great lunch with wine! walked all the way back at lunchtime for a fabulous caprese fritatta and white wine. Then waited at TKTS for tickets to Cinderella (which is terrific and has a twist just in case you thought it was the same old, same old Dinner just down from the hotel at Playwright Tavern before the theatre.

Sunday, after my duties with our plant church, I took a short rest and then went to Grand Central Terminal. Unfortunately, most of the shops were closing by the time I got there, though the guide book said they stayed open till 8. Not Oh, well. Our concert at Carnegie Hall was amazing! Lots of very la-di-da protocol rules for performers! Very full house, which surprised and delighted us all!

And then Tuesday morning I did walk through a well-populated Central Park to the Met. I swear I thought 3 hours would make a nice visit, but---you know those clocks on tv shows where the hour hand just spins indicating how quickly time has flow? Well, that's what my watch MUST have been doing. Barely scratched the surface of even the small pieces I wanted to visit! Then that evening, doing choral numbers at Brooklyn Tabernacle Church, another amazing experience.

Still on an adrenalin high and knowing we had to leave the next morning, roomie and I went down the street from our hotel to Stardust Diner. http://www.ellensstardustdiner.com/ Dug into potato pancakes with sour cream and applesauce while appreciating the vocal offerings of our wait staff. Very cool!
