Summer Beach trip- Biloxi and Dauphin Island

Husband and I and our three kids ( ages 12,11,6) recently returned back from a 14 day trip. We started in Arkansas and drove down to Biloxi, Mississippi. We stayed in the Palace- a Casino in Biloxi. We like that one because it is a smoke free casino. The rooms are nice and the buffets are great. For one thing they have half off buffets for kids ( while other places just have maybe like $3-$4 off or no discount). We ate the all you can eat crab legs 2 nights and it was very nice. They also have a burger place that the kids as well as my husband and I like. My husband spent a bit of time here and there in the casino and we spent a lot of time at the beach. The kids of course like it and there are several places we like to go. We ate at Hard Rock one evening and Shaggy's one night. Both were nice.
We drove to Gulfport to the Marine Mammal Research Institute which the kids loved! They had cute dolphin shows, a sea lion show and small bird and reptile shows. It was not that busy when we went which was in peak vacation season- so we thought that was great. I would recommend if you have kids- or maybe even for just adults. We stayed in Biloxi for 5 days, then on to Dauphin Island.

Dauphin Island is a true island and you access it by long bridges. The closest grocery store is about 45 minutes away in Theodore, so we got groceries there. There is a small store on the island but everything is about 5 times as expensive and it's very small. Great for just picking up a small item you forget but not for hard core grocery shopping for a family of 5. We stayed in a house on the beach and really enjoyed it. We went to several public beaches as well and our favorite was the one on the East End of the island. They had movies on the beach on Friday and Saturday nights so check into that if you are are there during the summer- the kids enjoyed. There are limited activities on the island and limited restaurants. If you have small children that need a lot of "stuff" to do you may want to reconsider. We drove to Mobile several days because the kids got tired ( literally and physically) of the beach. Our limit is about 4 hours a day.

We did a lighthouse and dolphin tour on the island which was great. We saw so many dolphins and even some "baby" dolphins. They were so cute. It was about a 3 hour tour so again- if you have very small ones- it might be too long. But our 6 year old did fine and enjoyed it. We brought a small cooler with water and snacks and it was fine.

There are places to rent jet ski's but we did not do that. Not really any shopping on the island- a small souvenir whop with typical t shirts and stuff. There is a snow cone and pizza stand and a few other restaurants, there is a Mexican restaurant that is take out only but was good and we have a few times. The other times we just cooked inside.
There is a bakery on the island that has pastries, cinnamon rolls etc. You have to get there early to get the good stuff. They sell out most of the time ( which makes me wonder why they don't just make a pan or so more... but I don't work there so I don't know). Even by 9:30 or so they are running out of some of the popular items.

Anyways- we spent 9 days on the island and it was relaxing and nice. 9 Days was a bit long for us- but would be great for a couple without kids that are wanting to do activities every day.
