Can use your help with suggestions on indoor activities to keep out of the rain.

We, 4 people (40s to 50s), will be in NYC from 5/15 to 5/18. I studied all the advice given on this board and planned our itinerary. We would have been doing a lot of walking in the various neighborhoods.

However, now it looks like it might be raining/storming in NYC when we are visiting.

We can go to the museums.

Any other suggestions for indoor activities?

How about going to a Broadway show? St Patrick's Cathdral? Macys/Bloomingdales etc if you like shopping? Grand Central Station (it may only be a train station, but it's worth seeing). Ellis Island (much of it is inside, but I don't know if bad weather would impact on the ferry schedule).

Also, my museum reccommendation would be the Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side http://www.tenement.org . It was a highlight for me when we visited NYC a couple of years ago.

Have a great time and I hope the weather doesn't dampen your enjoyment of the city (please excuse the pun!).

Seriously, you cannot tell what the weather is going to be like two weeks from now. It's good to be prepared for the full range of possiblities based on seasonal averages, but IMHO that's all you can do until a day or two before your departure, if that.

Lots of great indoor activities. Museums, shopping, theater, eating.

Bring a raincoat and umbrella and deal with it.

my dd who is visiting says the idea above for grand central terminal a great idea -

my daughter did this last month and raves about it adn she has lives in the city and can't believe she didn't do it sooner -

there are private guided tours as well as a self guided walking tour online -

she has now done both and thought the private tour had more information and fun stories about all sorts of historical tid bits

See a Cosmic Light show

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, American History Museum and Tenement Museum are all great.

I can easily spend over an hour at the Strand Bookstore.

It's unlikely to rain the entire time you're there. And those long range forecasts are NEVER accurate. They can't even predict the weather correctly only 5 days out, let alone 14!

Thank you all for your comments. The following activities are on our tentative itinerary for inside things to do. If it is sunny, we will spend a lot of time walking the neighborhoods.

The Public Library tour is supposed to be great -- we were sorry to have missed it.

Agree that you can;t count on forecasts that far in advance.

Second, spring rain in NYC is usually - not always - but usually fairly light - and shouldn't interfere with outdoor activities - unless you plan on a picnic in Central Park. Just make sure you have sturdy folding umbrellas, that your walking shoes are waterproofed - in case of puddles - and go ahead and do whatever you want.

NYCers don;t let a little rain stop them - weather is a natural part of life - and you won't melt from a few raindrops.

Is Top of the Rock inside? Can you see anything in bad weather?

Top of the Rock should be saved for a clear-weather day. There are some indoor viewing areas, but most are open-air rooftop terraces.

We want to go to the Top of the Rock, but have not purchased tickets b/c of possible bad weather.
