I'm planning a storm watching trip for early March, and I am looking for suggested locations where I could stay along the Oregon Coast. I'd like to be able to see the waves from my room while sitting in front of the fire and perhaps stand out on a balcony overlooking the rocks in the driving rain, but I'd also like to be near a town that has a grocery store and a bookstore to browse. I'm not particularly interested in glitz, spas, high-end dining, etc. I just want to watch the storms, read in front of the fire, and be in relative solitude. Any recommended locations--either in terms of towns or specific lodgings?

Not Oregon but further up the coast the Wickinninish Inn on Vancouver Island has exactly what you are looking for.

Rooms have floor to ceiling windows overlooking Pacific with fireplaces between. Decks with hot tubs.

I have heard wonderful things about the Wickinninish Inn that GoTravel suggested.

One place that we go to regularly is in Cannon Beach, called the Surfsand Resort. It is very close to Haystack Rock, right on the water, and they have nice fireplaces to keep you toasty while looking right out onto the water. We have st ayed at this place many times and it has always been great. You are within walking distance of everything in town there as well.

We've always enjoyed the Surfsand too, but I'm trying to think of ocean front lodgings where the coastline is a little more dramatic: waves crashing on rocks. In Cannon Beach, that would be the place closest to Haystack Rock, maybe the Stephanie Inn or Ocean Lodge. Or are they just as far south of Haystack as SurfSand is north?

Two places came to mind when I read your post. The Channel House in Depoe Bay, www.channelhouse.com looks very nice. It looks like all the rooms have gorgeous oceanviews and decks.

Since you're a book lover, how about the Sylvia Beach hotel? www.sylviabeachhotel.com This sounds like a very unique, relaxing place to stay. ***kim***

The Inn at Otter crest overlooks two headlands and has cottages with fireplaces.

The next headland to the north is Cape Foulweather. :-B

The Inn a Otter Crest has as the PO Otter Rock but it is easier to think as between Depoe Bay and Newport. 8 or 9 miles each.

We love the place having stayed there four or five times. :-B

Thank you, all, for the many excellent suggestions. The Wickanninish looks the most stunning, but it's also way beyond my budget, so I'll have to stick with one of the Oregon options, some of which look beautiful in their own right. Thanks again, though.

Remember that Wickanninish rates are quoted in Canadian dollars, and should be discounted by about 20% to get to the US equivalent.

The website for the Wickanninish Inn says to deduct 25% of posted rates for the US cost. A $320CD room would cost you $240US. That is quite a savings.
