Most threads on NYC suggest that visitors to the city take a ride on the Staten Island ferry. I think the news about a ferry crash resulting in deaths and injuries would be of immense interest to those visitors to the city intending to ride the ferry. Reason enough for a thread dealing with the ferry crash.

Sure it's travel. The Staten Island Ferry is one of the biggest tourist attractions in NYC.
Should we not post here if the Eiffel Tower fell over, or London Bridge was swept away by a flood? Or a popular tourist bus went off a mountain in Spain?
So this morning's news is that the pilot apparently either fell asleep or went unconscious at the wheel. It puts into perspective how we put our lives on the line every time we travel in any way! Not to be an alarmist, just telling it like it is.

I, for one, work in downtown NY near the ferry terminal and immediately thought of the Fodor's posters who have said they plan to take the ferry for a view of the city.
Interestingly, the NYTimes reported that most of the casualties and injuries were to regular commuters who tend to sit on the lower level near the door. They noted that tourists tend to go to the upper level for the views.
In any event, it is a terrible tragedy.

Some of you people are really callous. The Staten Island Ferry is a main mode of transportation in NYC, and I'm sure MANY Fodorites have used it, at least to get a great view. Those of you who are skeptical as to why anyone would post info. about ferry news are obviously oblivious to transportation in the NY area, so YOUR thoughtless & useless comments should be removed from this website. This is being considered the worst public transportation accident in NY in the past 100 years. If you can't at least have respect for the people who died or were seriously injured, than don't post anything!!!!!! Honestly!!!!!!!!!!!

As the original poster, I must respond that I certainly didn't intend to sound gossipy or callous. NYC has had more than its share of heartbreaking tragedies in the past few years. But this event is travel-related and thus befits discussion on these boards, as others above have pointed out.
When I advised travelers to "keep up with this story" I didn't intend to sound gossipy, I meant that since so many tourists who visit NYC take this ferry, they should check on whether the service was affected.
