Picnic basket for the the Staten Island Ferry?

After having seen recommendations for the Staten Island Ferry - as a great way to see the New York skyline - I wondered if it would be possible to buy a picnic basket or something similar to munch on during the trip.

Any pointers or advice?

Not sure I'd want to go as far as a picnic basket because the boat is dirty and the trip short but I have seen plenty of people eating and drinking on the Ferry. We've brown bagged cocktails before (I blame my brother in law for this because he is incorrigible).

Keep in mind that the Staten Island Ferry is primarily a commuter ferry. It's not the place for a picnic. You can definitely bring some snacks or a drink but, as GoTravel said, the ride is not that long.

If you're looking for a longer, sight seeing boat ride, the Circle Line Cruise might be a good option for you.

If you want to do a "Statue of Liberty" picnic; may I suggest doing so at Liberty State PArk? You will have great views of the Statue and the NY skyline. Also, if you'd find it enjoyable - The Liberty Science Center is near by and is wonderful. {Theres also an IKEA not far away either, but I digress

Another great way to see the skyline and take the ferry to SI, and see a baseball game played by the Staten Island Yankees -- their A team. We did this summer of 2005 and it was such fun.

Hope this helps...

Yes, go see the Staten Island Yankees. I was born and raised on Staten Island and am a diehard Yankees fan. It is so much fun to see baseball on Staten Island and you get a great view of Manhattan from the stadium.

Agreed, the ferry is not an appropriate place for a picnic. Maybe a tall boy & a tube of pringles, but not a picnic.
