I don't know the hotel but the Foggy Bottom area is safe. It's a long walking distance to the museums but you should be fairly close to the metro stop in Foggy Bottom and can use that. Foggy Bottom is actually in good walking distance for some of the memorials, like Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean War.

The area's fine. You're very close to George Washington University's campus. The museums are a fair hike. I'd take the metro. It's a very quick trip from Foggy Bottom to the Smithsonian stop.
I haven't been in the rooms at that hotel, so I can't really comment. It looks okay--not nasty or anything.

The State Plaza Hotel is outstanding value in terms of what you get for the money (I recommend that you check www.quikbook.com for a very competitive rate on this property). It's actually an all-suite hotel. The kitchenettes are handy and large enough to accommodate a small table and chairs. The sleeping rooms are large and there was also a powder room outside the bathroom -- all quite impressive for the money. The furnishings were more than adequate. Foggy Bottom has been described accurately by previous posters. It is a fine place to work from if your primary interest is monuments; the metro is close enough and it's an easy morning walk to the White House. There is a decent restaurant (Garden Cafe) in the lower level of one of the two buildings at the State Plaza. We regarded the hotel as well-maintained and I wouldn't hesitate to return -- although we generally opt for the Dupont Circle neighborhood now.

Just came back from a stay at the State Plaza last weekend and would only recommend it if you're looking for a no-frills but clean place. It's definitely more of a 2 star than 3. The bathrooms were noisy, and the hallways have a faint, mildewy smell. Service was friendly enough, but not stellar. And there are NO luxuries in the rooms (small tv, small bathroom, old furniture, no extra pillows, etc). Yes, you get a kitchenette but that's about the only plus. My room was NOT large by any means, but of ordinary hotel size (I got a regular stateroom suite, as opposed to the grand plaza suites mentioned on the website).
Area is perfectly fine and safe. Right across the street from GWU but in a quiet neighborhood.
We drove to the museums as it's quite a walk (about 12 blocks?). However, you can walk to the memorials no problem.

Stayed there several years ago. Suite was a bit shabby but acceptable. I think they had some better renovated suites also. We prefer the St. James -
it's a lot closer to the metro station (about 1 block) and has really excellent one bedroom suites with full, modern kitchens (not that we really use the kitchen). It's on 24th just south of K. Walking distance to both Georgetown and the White House area.
They sometimes have really great weekend rates.

Hello. I would like some recent opinions on this property. I just booked it for $75/night on priceline.com and am interested. We will be visiting at the end of April. It will be me and my 2 sons (6 and 10). We will be visiting the monuments, Air and Space, Natural History, National Zoo and another thing or 2. How close is the metro by time? What is the parking situation like...I think I read somewhere that there is street parking during the weekend? Thanks for any help.

Jay,
I stayed here in March and also got it through Priceline. Please tell me that it is now a 2 star property. It was a 3 star when I got it ($60/night), but I wrote several letters to Priceline asking them to lower the rating and was told they'd check into it... That said,it's not a bad property. Decent and acceptable, but not stellar.
Parking is easy on the weekends. Lots of spaces nearby. However, during the weekdays it's difficult to find (those pesky 1 hr limits) so you'll have to use their garage ($14/day or something like that.)
Metro is in about 5-10 minute walk in a relatively safe neighborhood (through GWU).
