"Spring breaker" in Key West

Hi, my boyfriend and I are going to Key West in late March and I just booked a room at the Angelina. The man on the phone said they don't take spring breakers, which we aren't, and he said that if we get there and we turn out to be spring breakers they won't rent us the room. Does anyone know what type of behavior or profile of person qualifies as a spring breaker? I'm by nature a bit of a worrier about things, hence my asking about this.

We're both 25 but neither of us are crazy partyers, although we do like to go out and have fun, we just want to go and be in the sun and have a great vacation. I'm worried that if we come back drunk one night we'll be kicked out. I've never been down there over spring break so maybe the spring breakers are notoriously out of control so this may be a silly question, I'm just a little paranoid now because I don't want to find ourselves without a place to stay.

Thanks for your help!

You pose an interesting question. I'd be tempted to call the guy back and ask him how he would know if you were 'spring breakers'. I am guessing one thing they are trying to avoid is having a room full of people. One person pays, and a dozen stay. As long as you're not making a lot of noise, I'm sure you won't have any problems. All the innkeepers in Key West are certainly used to having their guests return somewhat inebriated. At any rate, I'd try not to worry.

I'd say it he is simply setting a standard for acceptable behavior. He wants to rent to adults, not partying kids.

If you think you will behave like adults (which you ARE at 25!) then you will have no problem. If you want to act like spring breakers (loud, drunk, promiscuous) then you should go someplace else.

To me, that is a red flag and I would be looking for other accommodations.

There is a reason he brought up the suggestion and you don't want to spend your holiday walking on eggshells.

Check out the El Patio or the Southernmost Hotel.

I have been in KW during spring break and can explain that you should have no fear of staying at Angelina... many of the B&B and small inn properties have these restrictions because even a small group of college age partiers can ruin the entire stay of all of their guests... especially when they attempt to sneak unpaid guests into rooms, swim past pool hours, enter the grounds loudly after midnight, prank, drink heavily, room party, and otherwise disrupt the property... there is an image of Key West for Breakers that anything goes, and there are motels and hotels that will allow such behavior, but the property owner has to protect his guests and you have been notified that there are property rules... this is for your enjoyment too!

My bad experience with this involved an "older" couple that booked a separate room for their teenage boys during spring break... while the parents enjoyed a separate and romantic stay at the inn, their kids tore up the place when mom and dad weren't around... when we complained to the Innkeeper, he spoke to the family and after another incident, they were asked to leave... the Innkeeper explained to us that all of the other guests had complained and the Family was given the "house rules" upon checkin... they were clearly printed in our room guide and they had clearly violated them...

The good news is that he was able to quickly fill the rooms with walk-in guests through a great referral system in key west... don't worry and have fun!

There is a reason there are places which will "tolerate" certain behaviors just as there was areason that innkeeper had to wait until at least TWO other guests complained about the teenagers (and then later asserted that "everyone" had complained!!!!) BEFORE he 'asked them to leave" and we know that "reason" is revenue.

Defining a "Spring Breaker" incorrectly by the folks at your prospective lodging could easily lead to a discrimination suit but at least you are assured, probably, that your accommodation will be quite while you are there....maybe!
