SPORT VENUES IN NEW YORK

Hi we're travelling with our 10year old son to New York this October and would like to see a basketball, baseball, ice hockey or any USA sport any suggestions??. It appears from the Carnegie Hall web pages that the basketball matches have finished by October.

Baseball has finished by October unless the Yankees or Mets are in the playoffs. The Knicks (basketball) will just be starting their season at the end of October so it's possible that you can catch a pre-season game at Madison Square Garden.

My suggestion would be to see the NY Jets or NY Giants football teams in action. They will definitely be playing in October.

As for ice hockey, who knows if they will play in 05-06?!?

The NBA (National Basketball Association) plays many of its preseason games in October, so that may be an option. However, you'll probably have to wait until sometime in the summer for the NY Knicks and the NJ Nets (the local NY area basketball teams) to release their preseason schedule.

As for baseball, the Major League playoffs usually start in October, so if any of the local teams are in the playoffs you might be able to do that. NFL (American Football) tickets can be difficult to come by in the NY area and there may be a chance that the NHL (Ice Hockey) may not play next season as there is an ongoing labor dispute.

As mentioned, tickets for both the Giants and Jets might be expensive in October. They are likely available from a ticket broker, but you will need to pay a premium for these seats.

I'm assuming you're coming from outside the US?

I might suggest that as an alternative to one of the professional sports teams, you take advantage of the proximity of several colleges and universities.

To me, the two best options are a game at either Princeton or at West Point (the US Military Academy). Not sure what their 2005 schedules are so you'd need to consult their website. Both have great stadiums and long traditions. In many ways, the atmosphere at a college game surpasses what you'd find at a professional game.

Princeton can easily be reached by train from NYC using New Jersey Transit. For a game at West Point, you might want to check the website for the NY Waterway Ferry as they run combination boat/game ticket packages for all of West Point's home game.

Giant and Jet games are both sold out but tickets can be purchased from a ticket broker or from some ticket holders who, for whatever reason, can't attend a game. There are websites where this can be done. One website is http://www.buyselltix.com. Type "Football Tickets" into a earch engine and you will find others listed. Expct to pay well over the actual cost of the ticket.

If there is a hockey season, it will start in October, and you'll have thee choices for teams: the Rangers in Madison Square Garden, the Islanders on Long Island, or the the New Jersey Devils. You can check nhl.com for updates on the labor dispute ...

(Some of us remain hopeful, anyway...)

Unfortunately - you're between a rock and a hard place. Football seson will be in full swing - but the teams only place once per week - usually Sunday afternoon - the seats are sold out to season ticket holders - and to get them from a scalper is VERY expensive.

As others mentioned the hockey team owners have locked out the players in an effort to cut their salaries - and who knows if they will have settled the dispute by then.

Basketball in pre-season will probably be your best best - go to the web site of the knicks or the nets to get ticket info later in the summer.

Ordinarily the Yankees would be playing post-season baseball then (but those tickets would also be very hard to get and expensive - minimum $100 per ticket) but unfortnately they have had a slow start and consequently their management has recently run mad - and it is now debatable if they will even make the playoffs.

If you ask again in August people will have better info for you.

I would second the recommendation for an army football game if possible. Great atmosphere, great location and a good time.

If they don't have a game that matches your schedule, there are other schools in the area that might have something that would work, so let us know once you have exact days scheduled.

If the Mets or Yankees are still alive in October, tickets will be impossible to come by. Knicks tickets will be easier to come by. Football will be tough.

You may be able to find some college sports events. Check the NYU and COlumbia U. websites (and any other metro area college).

Sorry MFNYC -

Yankees playoff tickets are never impossible to get. We go every year. Just use e-bay (usually better prices) or one of the on-line brokers.

We're always able to get field boxes and once even lucked out with seats in a legends box. (Naturally there are a lot of lower priced tickets available as well.)

Ok, not impossible, but my guess is expensive and possibly risky if from ebay.

This year it just may be a Mets playoff season for a change. Go Mets!!

I would highly recommend going to West Point to see an Army football game if at all possible.

If you go early, you can see the parade of Cadetts (sp?).

Michie Stadium, high above the Hudson River, provides one of the most breathtaking views in the northeast during Octoer.

Coincidentally enough, the schedule for Army football was in the paper today. Looks like they have home games the first two Saturday's in October but are on the road for the last two Saturday's.
