Steve, I stayed at the Southernmost on my first trip to Key West and I liked it...the room was clean and nicely decorated and the staff was friendly...the room I was assigned was on the second floor and it overlooked the pool, which was also nice...from there you can walk to the southernmost point in the US...I didn't think it was too far to walk to the heart of old town, but I've read reports from other posters who felt that it was...it was a good value.

I also stayed at the Southernmost Motel on my first trip to Key West last summer. It was recommended to us by a relative but then I was also concerned because I read a lot of posts saying that it was so far from anything. I walk quite a bit because I have to walk a couple of miles from the train to my office every day so I didn't think the walk was too long. My 15 yr old son and husband who don't walk at all didn't mind the walk. It is probably about 20 - 30 minutes to Mallory Square walking relatively slow and there are shops all along the way on Duvall. We never moved our car after we got there. We had a first floor room and I would have preferred being on the second floor.

It is a nice place for the money. I live here and hear the dirt on many places but this place gets very few complaints if any. The location is fine but it is on the quiet end of Duval. I agree it is only a 20-30 minute walk to the complete other end of Duval (Mallory Square) but there are lots of cute galleries and shops in between. I think you have access to the beach on one of their other places called Southernmost on the Beach which is very close.

I have stayed here 5+ times and have always enjoyed it. There are 2 pools and a tiki bar. Some of the rooms only have a window A/C unit and some (overlooking the pool) have central A/C. They also own the property called THe South BEach Motel, accross the street so you can use their pool and beach area. The walk to the other end of Duval is about 1 mile but you pass so much neat stuff to look at that it goes by quickly. Usually, we walk to the bar area at night and end up taking a cab home later (about $6) The SOuthernmost is definitely a great find for the money- the other hotels in K.W are very highly priced and I've seen the rooms , for ex. at the Hilton, and they are nothing more special. They are usually a lot of 20-30 somethings at the SOuthernmost- very fun if you are in that age group and even if not. It is very clean and the staff is friendly. When you are in K.W. do not miss Blue Heaven in Bahama Village for Breakfast- it's great and famous for B-fast and Banana Bread! Also, Mangoes on Duval for lunch or DInner has a great atmosphere and Kelly's restaurant (one on Duval and Oneon Whitehead St.) owned by actress Kelly McGillis - great food! For nightlife, The Irish pb on Duval is always fun! You'll love it , yes, there is a rauncchy side but you can ignore it, just like any city!
