Solo short trip opinions?

Now that my kids are getting independent and my husband likes the new me that comes back after occasional getaways, I'm trying to pick new places that a female traveler would feel safe and enjoy.
I'm very active, like wine, hiking, and cultural exhibits. Ideas can be for anywhere, though I've never ventured to the eastern states, south or midwest(mostly all NW, plus Hawaii and SW, and current resident of SC Alaska.
I'd like to also try a cruise in the fall, somewhere along the Mexican coast or perhaps leaving from Miami and exploring the western Caribbean.(Yes, I plan to inquire on the cruise board too).
Thanks for any stories you have to share or advice, J.

well I would like you try Canadian Mountain Holidays helihiking in Canada- Alberta or BC.
I have wanted to try it myself but never get to it - so if you would go and give me a report I would appreciate it.
They have a website so check it out and
remember prices are Canadian so a little less than US dollars

Canada is a wonderful idea~ I tend to forget about our closest neighbor! And forget about cruise advice, I've already decided I'm too much of a free spirit to be on a large ship(unless I went nuts and decided to be a freelance "escort")haha!

Jetset, I went to Maine by myself a few years ago and never felt unsafe. I went to Ogunquit (plenty to see and do within walking distance), Freeport (L.L. Bean), Camden and Boothbay. It was wonderful.

If you are interested in the SW, Santa Fe comes to mind. If you like "cultural exhibits" I think you would love Mesa Verde NP. I believe you can even volunteer for digs there or similar locations. Coming from Alaska, I think the SW would be a great change of scenery and climate.

If you'd like to venture into the southeastern US, I'd recommend Charleston, SC. The historic area is compact enough that you can walk just about everywhere. There is plenty of great dining, shopping, and cultural exhibits. Plus, Charleston is a city where I would feel completely comfortable on my own as a female. I have yet to explore the more active side of Charleston, but since it is close to the coast, I'm sure there are active pursuits out there, but I have yet to tear myself away from the King St. shopping to find them!

BetsyinKY~ My sister-in-law and daughters visited that area during March spring break. I have enjoyed the novels which referred to the history in that part of the US. Thanks and I'll keep it in mind, J.

I don't know how you feel about big cities, but I can get lost in Chicago for days just looking/doing. Museums, and many cultural events to numerous to list, and you need not drive at all. I also find that in recent years, single guests are also treated better in restaurants than in past, IMHO. This is a great get away for 4 or 5 days. There is also theater, opera etc. if you are inclined. Shopping or spas as well, if that is your desire. September is a great time to come, or early October.

You can get transport from airports to downtown quite easily and just enjoy.

JJ5~ I am seriously thinking of taking my 15 yr. old son to Chicago in late July while his younger brother has a week at summer camp. He will enjoy some of the museums I'm sure. I'm doing research into that currently. Thanks!

Two times in the last 6 months I have done 2 day getaways solo. But your son/you combo would be terrific. "Wicked" has been extended and would still be available, I think. www.metromix.com might help you.

Hi jetset, I was just in Charleston SC a month ago and sure agree with BetsyinKy about being in Charleston. Beautiful city and I would feel perfectly fine being their on my own. Lots of tours that you can take if that would interest you.

Also Jetset, have you ever visited San Francisco? IMO SF is a great city for a solo woman traveler. Since you are in Alaska that would be an easy flight for you. Many solo women come to SF so I would think you would feel very welcomed.

LoveItaly~ yes, I adore SF, haven't been there for a few yrs., but I think the South appeals to me, also Chicago and the NE. I hate to say this, but my 15 yr. old has preconceptions of "certain" types of people in SF, at 15, they have that paranoia, so I'd go there solo if I wanted to enjoy it, or take my dh. Thanks for joining in!

jetset1, there's a current thread about biking in Chicago, which is an activity which I think you and your son might enjoy.

If you aren't into biking, Chicago has Segway tours as well. Something to consider.

I am a married mother of a 27 month old girl. I have not had a vacation in almost 3 years. My husband, on the other hand, has had several (with his family). I am not ready to leave my daughter overnight with anyone other than my husband. I have always been welcome to go where my dh has traveled, but with a 2 year old, it is not much of a vacation for me. My dh told me I should plan a vacation by myself or with my girlfriend. I live in Florida and would like to go somewhere close (by myself) for just a couple of days. Any suggestions?
