Duffy's Tavern! When we lived in Monterey, we were right, and I mean right, around the corner. In 1997, it was slightly grotty but served up a great, juicy burger. It's not near anything but the POM Annex (DLI), but if it's an old haunt, you might enjoy checking it out; I hope someone can tell you what it's like now. Have fun!

In the 2.5 years I was at Ft. Ord, I went to Duffy's maybe 5-6 times. Not a regular by any means, but enough to have several fond memories. Dated a woman for most of my last year there and took her to Duffy's for our first date. Quite the big spender!
So, I certainly want to go. Since I know it still exists, its one of the few absolutes in my trip. And the aquarium.
About all I have left to decide on is finding a way from San Jose airport to the area. I'll probably rent a car at SJC, but wondered if there wasn't a shuttle of some sort that would allow me to pickup/dropoff in Monterey.
Thanks again everyone!

In Denver there is a weekly paper called the WestWord that's free and has lots of information about events, food, movies, music, etc in the Denver area. Does the Monterey area have a similar type of paper?
I ask because it's getting closer to my trip and I was thinking about getting a travel guide book on the area, but thought that maybe it would be better to wait and pick something up there. Something more current.
I have a pretty good idea of what I'd like to do while I'm there, thanks to you all, but there may be little happenings that only happen while I'm there that a guide book might not have.
Thanks again!

Hey CaliNurse, has that bagel bakery been around a long time? I ask because I remember the first time I ever had a bagel was while I was stationed at Ft Ord, 20 years ago. I'm from a small town in Nebraska, so back then bagels were an exotic deal. Anyway, the place I went with some friends was just on the PG side of the "tunnel." We went for brunch and got bagels with turkey and avacado and lots of good stuff. I remember then going back to visit my family and bringing them bagels. The first time they had ever had them either. I was a trend setter back then because I also introduced them to Chinese food. My mom was excited to try it, my dad not so much, as he was meat and potatoes. But he ended up liking it more than my mom.
Anyway, just flashing back. Thanks for the memory!
Any advice on local information type newspapers?
