We are going to Maui in the next few weeks and I am wondering whether we should bring our own snorkel gear or rent when we get there. Any recommendations for places to rent for a week? We are staying at the Renaissance in Wailea, but I'm not sure how much they charge, whether they have gear. Thanks - Megan

We went about five years ago and rented for the week. It wasn't very expensive at all, but you know, I can't remember the name of the place! Sorry- I do remember they were all over. It was like "Snorkel Bob's" or something profound like that.

I was in Maui last November and decided to buy my equipment and bring it with me to Maui. There are plenty of places to rent but if you plan to do a lot of snorkeling and hope to have other trips to snorkel on you may want to get your own equipment. For the best experience you'll want some quality gear which you can rent but it starts to get expensive.

So if you think you'll do this more then once, it is probably worth the investment. Hope this helps!

We took our own with us last time we went. but we normally rent. There are several different chains which rent equipment - Boss Frogs, Snorkel Bobs. You can usually find good rental coupons in the various magazines & booklets which you can find at the airport.

Snorkel Bobs is the recomended one. They give you the defogger stuff.

When I visited Maui I had planned to rent snorkel equipment. I actually ended up purchasing my own (mask and snorkel only) at a dive shop. I actually spent less money on the equipment in Maui than I would have at home! I wasn't on the same part of the island, tho (Kahana).

There are places all over but, two of the most popular are Snorkel Bob's and Maui Dive Shop -- both of which can be found just north of Wailea. They have comparable prices with good equipment.
If you need a prescription mask it is considerably more expensive.
My cost with prescription mask, best snorkel and fins was around $40/week.
