Smugglers Notch or Killington?

Me, my husband and son age 8 want to try out skiing this winter. All of us are beginngers or first timers. Which resort would you recommend, Smuggler's Notch or Killington and why? Thanks so much! All tips are appreciated.

Smugglers is one of the best places to learn to ski around. Their instructional package is great. They have great facilities and 3 mountains to choose from. They are known as a family resort with lots of kid and familly friendly events.

I would not recommend Killington for beginners. It's such a big resort, I think it would be overwhelming for a beginner.

Is there a reason why you've chosen Killington or Smuggs? If not, look into the smaller, lesser known mountains in Vermont. Chances are prices will be cheaper and the slopes less crowded. Try Burke Mountain in northern VT (www.skiburke.com) or Ascutney in South/Central Vermont. If it definatly needs to be Killington or Smuggs, I'd choose Smuggs for the aforementioned reasons. Have fun!

Another great family mountain for learning to ski is Okemo. Nearby Killington if you wanted to try a day there also. Otherwise, another vote for Smugglers Notch.

Another nice area to learn would be Suicide Six, a small to medium sized mountain just outside of Woodstock (very nice town!) Vt. Don't let the name Suicide scare you - it's actually a local family type place with an easy beginners slope, never really crowded, in a very scenic, untouristy area.
