I plan on travelling to NY next year. I am a 20 year old female and will be travelling on my own.
Any suggestions on where to stay (nice but not too expensive)?
What should I definately see, not necessarily all the usual tourist places, just places of interest.
Some great places to eat.
And anything else which you think will help me.
I will probably be there for a week or a little longer.

General travelling tips could help too as this will be my first time travelling overseas and the first time I'll be travelling by myself.

Assuming you mean NYC and Manhattan, I suggest Le Parker Meridian. The reason I suggest this is that you do not have to be 21 in order to stay there (this came up in a prior thread).

Get a copy of Time Out New York and start reading The Village Voice. The Village Voice is online and will provide you a list of upcoming events.

If you can find a hotel downtown, I would suggest that.

SoHo, the Lower East Side, Chelsea, Village, East Village, Tribeca are all funky fun places that will appeal to a 20 year old.

I suggested this to someone in a recent thread you could search for, but check out the Hudson Hotel on West 58th ST.
A very funky, trendy hotel, with a great "scene", lots of celebs hanging out at the bar, etc. It's a beautiful hotel, and prices are good by NY standards-under $200. There are so many threads here on places to see and eat, etc., you may want to do a search of NY or NYC and take a look. If you have specifics of kinds of food you like, let us know and we can help more. But the areas GoTravel suggested are great, SoHo, Tribeca, Village you should really enjoy.

hi. you can try the eddison hotel, its located on time sq,,or just a half min walk away, so the location is excelent. its about 100us pr night, the rooms are a bit run down,but the staff is great, and i think you are not going to stay at the hotel all the time, another hotel in that price rang is empire hotel, up at lincoln center, i did stay there for 5 nights in august, and i have no problem of staying there again, and the have a cd player in all the rooms,so bring your cds..you will find restaurants at every corner in all price ranges..what to see??? i have to say everything,,there is SO much to see and do in that city,,i think if you stay there for 20 years,you will have done a lot!!!, the best thing is to walk,walk,and walk, and do the brooklyn bridge, so you can see the skyline, nothing can beat that...i know you will enjoy the city,i have been there 6-7 times, and im going back in march..

You should definitely see the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Canal Street & Broadway north of Canal for shopping, St. Mark's Place for the freakshow bohemian atmosphere, and for about 2 minutes Times Square. Take the free Staten Island ferry round-trip for a great view of the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan (just stay on in Staten Island and ride back).

First of all, are you a student? If you are, you probably have limited funds, so if you want to save money, there is a very good hostel (American Youth Hostel, 103rd and Amsterdam Avenue). It's quite nice and there are many other young travelers and group-outings so you'll have lots of fun as a single traveler.

There are lots and lots of places to eat, I would check either www.digitalcity.com or www.citysearch.com for suggestions. Neighborhoods to check out are Greenwich Village, SoHo and the East Village where there are lots of cafes, funky shops and bars. Places to visit are Central Park, Metropolitan Museum, Natural History Museum, Times Square, the list is endless. After you get here, stop by the visitors information center at 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue where you can pick up subway maps, a metro card, and get advice on what to see and where to go. Enjoy!
