December in San Francisco is a light jacket, snickers, maybe hat with gloves, maybe not. Usually it's dry. Never snow.
Grand Canyon - don't know, but the thought of snow, perhaps slippery icy roads makes me shiver even now as I am typing this.

SF is much warmer than the Grand Canyon. And much more little kid friendly. Many of the walks, hikes, etc as CG are just way too much for kids that age. And if they aren't used to cold weather they will probably be bored. And too much sitting in a car.
Along the CA coast there are a lot of places they can stop, play, rest, see sights that interest them as well as you. Can you imagine what happens in a car in freezing weather then they start with are we there yet - every 15 minutes and you have 2 hours left to go?
