Should we cancel Sept. vacation in West Glacier?
We have reservations in West Glacier in early September. Should we change our travel plans? Am concerned both about whether Going to the Sun will reopen from west as well as fire damage itself. We cannot cancel after 8/6 without losing our full 2-night deposit on the cabin. Hope someone can advise, thanks.

Would suggest you contact the hotel you are staying with to see if in light of circumstances their cancellation policy has changed. Just as in Yellowstone in '88 the entire park has not been burned. It would be a sight to see the results almost immediately following this major fire, then to come back in several years and compare how well nature rebounds. You could always go to Waterton Lakes if you could get reservations.

I would follow the suggestion above and call. The situation changes day to day and we get only a sketchy outline of what is really going on.
Even if there is fire on the west side, there is plenty to do and see on the east side of the park. I know Many Glacier is trail center, and there are quite a few miles of trail along the eastern boundary and just inside of it.
I would keep my plans until forced to change. I realize the money is an incentive in this case to come up with an alternative.
I agree that Waterton is an option.
There are commercial motels in the park and a few in Pincher Creek and Cardston.
You might change your plans, but I think there will be enough to see and do regardless of the west side fire.

Hello from Northwest Montana.
Apgar and West Glacier is OPEN as of this morning. Gong to the sun road will reopen tommorow. August5.
Temperatures have dropped considerably and we are no longer in the high 90s and 100s. We even recv. some rain Sunday night(.07 of an inch) and a few showers are predicted the rest of the week. The Robert fire which was threating Apgar and West Glacier has been brought under control using burnouts which can be dangerous but worked perfect for this fire.
The results of the fire should not be apparent from the road until one reaches the Loop on the Sun highway.
Temp at the moment(8:20 mountain time) is 75 degrees with partly cloudy skies and a slight breeze.
Ten day forecast is for temps.in the high 80s,low 90s with evening temps. in the high 40s low 50s.
Come on out!!
