Short Weekend, Greensboro
Me and my husband will spend a weekend in Greensboro in August for his work. We enjoy nature (hiking, rafting, etc.), window shopping in small towns and good food. What are some of activities we can do around Greensboro? We don't mind driving an hour or so but we don't want to spend half a day in a car.
Thanks,
E.

Take one afternoon and drive the short distance to Winston-Salem (20-30 minutes) and tour Old Salem, a preserved/restored 18th century village. Very interesting and lovely. Good restaurants abound in Greensboro - our favorite is Bert's Seafood on Spring Garden. Not hard to find, it's just off Wendover and anyone at the hotel can help with directions. There are many, many other choices, including the ubiquitous chain restaurants, but you don't have to settle for those. I've lived in this area my whole life and I truly would not want to live anywhere else. Have a great time.

Elif and Postal,
I second Paige's suggestion of Old Salem in Winston-Salem. You should also consider driving to Pilot Mountain (north of W/S on Highway 52). It's probably no more than 1.5 hours from Greensboro. You drive up the (small) mountain, and you can hike around some decent trails at the summit. The view is somewhat unique because Pilot Mountain is not really in the mountains.
As to restaurants, I am more familiar with those in W/S than Greensboro, so in W/S consider:
Nobles (elegant)
South by Southwest (creative southwestern-style cuisine; great margaritas)
Michael's (fine dining)
Zevely House (historic house, simple fine dining)
Village Tavern (near Wake Forest University and Reynolda Gardens--a good destination in itself)
West End Cafe (downtown, casual, a local favorite)
Have a great time!
