I have not been there for a couple years, but I think you described it well. It is a combination of the attributes you mentioned. I think it is more of a "scene" during advertising conventions etc. It was quite relaxing in early Decemmber, but I bet that changeswith the season!!

My cousins stayed there while I stayed at the Salisbury, so I got to check out their room.
I think they ended up in the older side of the hotel (the elevator was tiny). The room was cool, if you are one, at the max two people. Very small room, and very dark. Lots of chrome and funky lighting. The bathroom was the tiniest I have ever seen. TV was a 13 inch TV, but there was a nice stereo in the room.
Overall, I think it's a nice hotel. But the reviews often say it's satisfactory if you understand your room may be small.
It definitely did not feel like a "scene" when we were there a month ago.

I stayed at the Shoreham via Priceline this past March. It's a cute boutique hotel. The customer service was exceptional! I checked in within five minutes, In terms of room size, I think it's a matter of luck. I stayed in a nice sized room with a queen bed, good sized television, cedar closet, stereo, and a fridge/wetbar. The bathroom was extremely campact but functional. Other than a glass shelf over the sink, there really is no vanity space. Overall, I was pleased with the Shoreham and would not hesitate to stay there in the future.
