I'll be in NYC next month and am looking
for a great place to buy shoes- A store
with a wide variety of brands and types
of shoes, not outrageously expensive.

Bloomies and Macys are good places to start, and fun.

I used to visit a discount store midtown called "Daisey's" (I think --confirmation anyone?) They carried everything from designer to junk, and if you hit it on a good day, you'd be thrilled.

I think you are thinking of "Daffy's".

yeah I know it's not the NYC shopping experience but I highly suggest renting a car (or going witha tour service that goes there) and going to Woodbury commons 45 minutes outside of NYC. Tons of premium outlets (donna karan, calvin klein, gucci...etc). Get the NYC look without the price. : ) Plus they have a Kenneth Cole outlet!

8th street. Also Broadway around 8th street. Tons of shoe stores. If you want to go more upscale, check out Barneys uptown and Sigerson Morrison in Nolita.

Here are my shoe places. Lord & Taylor (often has sales); Loehmann's (7th Avenue & 17th Street); Burlington Coat Factory (23rd Street & 6th Avenue); Century 21 (Broadway - near World Trade Center).
