Trying to steer clear of the "shabby factor" and still get a deal. My husband and I are travelling with his Mom and Aunt (not stong walkers like us) so we want to be fairly close to Rockerfeller Plaza area and within 2 or so blocks of subway. I'm not wild about Times Square. We need a K or Q plus 2 double beds in a separate room with a separate full bath (ie 2 full baths). Kimberly would be fabulous but I can't find any two bedroom suite there for under $425.

After scouring this board and the internet, here's what I've come up with.
Gorham 2 1 br deluxe suites for $235 night

Doral Park Ave, 1 deluxe king w/adjoining double for $308 both rooms combined.

Roosevelt $189 night per room for two rooms.

So far the Doral is much less expensive, but I can't really find much feedback on it -- Does anyone know anything about it?

We're used to higher end properties when we travel -- New York is such a challenge! I appreciate this board and any help you all could offer.

The only place on your list I've stayed was the Gorham, and it's a lovely boutique-type property. However, based on your price list, it looks like it would be the most expensive option. If I understand you correctly, it would be $470nite? ($235 X 2) However, if it is only $235/nite for both rooms, I'd say grab it.

In the event that it really is $470/nite, I'd make the following suggestion: They also have "standard" rooms, meaning not suites, that still have a mini kitchenette and marble bathroom, and the rate should be much less. Maybe you can get two of those. Good Luck.

The Doral is located at the corner of Park and 38th Street, a lovely stretch of Park just south of Grand Central. It is a good hotel; I would consider it a step above the Roosevelt. It is, however, the furthest from Rockefeller Center, so if that is your primary consideration it would not be the best choice.

Thanks for your responses. Yes, $470 for the two rooms at the Gorham and the price differential between the 1 BR and Jr. Suite is only $20, but I can watch for last minute deals.

I'm happy to hear the good word on the Doral Park Avenue. I'm assuming we can easily take the #6 train close to Rockerfeller Plaza. Based on the price, as long as its a fairly decent hotel, I'll take it.

I am sure others will chime in, but subway dirctions to get there:

Either #7 or Shuttle from Grand Central to Fifth Ave and then take the B or D to the Rockefeller Center Station (one stop).

If going shopping on Fifth, take the #6 from Grand Central to 51st and transfer to the E (one stop) to Fifth Avenue.

Have also stayed at the Gorham and would highly recommend it as a small boutique hotel. It was so convenient to everything! If you decide to go there don't be disillusioned by the small lobby- the rooms are very comfortable and include a modern kitchenette with microwave- very handy for those deli leftovers. The rooms on the front of the hotel are the quietest. There's a breakfast room with a buffet bkfst. which is a bit pricey for the weekday version- for the same price you get more on the weekends. This was a relaxing way to start the day but there are also bakeries (one right across the street) where you can eat for a lot less.
Haven't stayed at the Roosevelt but went to the lobby to get a brochure and was quite impressed! If this is any indication of the rest of the place, you get a lot for your dollar here. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It has gotten great reviews on travelocity. It's a much larger hotel than the Gorham so depends on what you want. Last week I think Quickbook had the Gorham for $139 and I know it had the Roosevelt for $119 (have been searching for my own future trip). Good hunting and good luck!

I have stayed at the Roosevelt and my
room was pretty small. I did like the location, but $189 seems a bit high.
(Expedia has it for $119 for some Sept.
dates.) You might also check Courtyard
Marriott East. Its modern, but not fancy
and the rooms are large, plus its not that far from Rockefeller Plaza. Subway

Thanks for the posts and information. Many discount booking sources won't guarantee two double beds in the room. Too bad, I usually do really well finding great rates that way.

Unless someone has a negative word on the Doral Park Avenue, we've decided on that one -- but I'll keep my eye out for last minute deals at the Gorham. Greatly appreciate this board and your helpful advice.
