I had a portable white noise machine from Brookstone but I have now found that iTunes has white noise tracks that can be downloaded and played in a loop on my laptop, which means I do not have to carry the extra gadget.
You can also burn it to a CD.

Hi,
Schmerl here. My white noise machine is also from Brookstone. Here's a link to it:

I found one for 1/4 the price by Conair. It's white noise isn't quie as nice as the Brookstone one, but the price is sure nice. I got the Conair machine at Walmart they have it at Target too:
Conair Infant Sound Machine- SU7

Seriously, there is no need for a separate machine if you have an ipod or laptop.
I have 2 problems with my Brookstone machine.
#1 It is on a timer. I need the machine to run all night because most of the sounds in hotels are from 10p-2am and 4am-8am.
I don't want to wake up and turn it back on everytime I hear a noise!
My new solution loops and plays all night, with no break or change in sound at all, all night.
#2 The sound from a machine has detectable patterns which irritate me. The looping MP3 has no detectable sound patterns.
I use my VOIP speaker since its louder and I carry it when I travel. You can buy tiny, cheap speakers for laptops.
This perfect system costs .99.
Yes, 99 cents! and it works a hellova lot better than a 80.00 machine!

Neither my Brookstone machine or the much less expensive Conair are on a timer. Both of the machines run straight through until I turn them off.
The Conair has more of what TxTravelPro reders to as a "cycle", but as long as it is continuous, I find it soothing.
I don't travel with a laptop or Ipod, so my machines work for me.
I got the Conair on special for under $15. The Broostone one was at least $60, but really priceless!
