I am attending a conference in the historic district of Savannah, GA in late April. The historic district hotels cost more than the maximum amount that my company allows, so I am looking for a decent hotel that costs under $100 that is located a few miles outside the Hist. Dist. I am hoping to find one that is an easy and quick commute during rush hour. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've read positive reviews on the SpringHill Suites Savannah Midtown and luke warm ones on Hampton Inn Savannah Midtown, so if you have stayed at either of these I'd appreciate your feedback. Thank-you.

you should be able to find good accomodations in your price range in the Midtown section. There are numerous motels there. Look for ones with an address on Abercorn Street, Midtown location.

Will you have your car? If so, the drive in will be easy. If you have to depend on public transport, you might have trouble with timing. However, it's possible. The CAT does service that midtown area.

If you have a car, any in the Midtown area of Abercorn will work just fine. Easy drive into the Historic District via Abercorn. The Hampton Inn has outside entrances, if that matters to you. Some folks prefer interior halls. I don't care either way. Just about every chain in represented in the Midtown area. Definitely not the ambiance of the historic district, but just fine...and lots of chain restaurant options nearby.

A third vote for "Midtown" area. We have stayed at several, and the only real dog is the Days Inn.

Just so you know, "Midtown" is not the middle of any town. It is on a 2 lane highway/major street (Abercorn) with every big box store, chain restaurant, etc. you have ever heard of. Also every hotel chain - usually less expensive version of such. Medium-sized shopping mall is in same area. No atmopshere, perfectly safe, and even if you do not have a car, cab fare is relatively cheap to historic district.

We have also stayed at SpringHill Suites and it was fine.

PRICELINE, name your own price. Do River Street and 3 or 4 stars, and you may be surprised. My husband didn't want to pay the group rate of $145 for his last convention at the Hyatt. So I got on Priceline and bid $100, 4 stars, prepared to stay elsewhere, and got the Hyatt. A few years ago I went to Savannah wedding, did the same thing and got the Westin. What do you have to lose?

Just be careful - or at least aware that when you bid on Priceline, the taxes, etc. are added to the bid price.

An $85 bid comes to over $100 with taxes, etc. Parking charges are on top of that.

Also, some companies do not allow Priceline room charges on their T&E policies. Thankfully, mine does.

We had good luck at the Hilton Desoto. Many don't like it because it is not aesthetically pleasing from the outside, but the rooms are very good and they offer decent discount.
