Hi, We are planning our travel from south Florida back home to the Northeast in mid-March. Got lots of great info reading all the posts here about where to stay in Savannah.We definitely want to stay in the Historic district. Here are a few places with comparable prices that I've narrowed it down to:
Planters Inn
Staybridge Suites
Inn at Ellis Square
Hampton Inn on Bay
I believe that they all charge for parking (couldn't locate that info for Staybridge.)
And I believe that they all include breakfast.
Can anyone recommend a standout among these choices? Location (for walking to sights) and cleanliness are our priorities. Free breakfast and reasonable parking rates, too.
Any opinions?

We've stayed at the Planters Inn and at Inn at Ellis Square. We thought the Planters Inn was wonderful, while the Inn at Ellis Square fine, but not as nice. Fabulous breakfast at Planters Inn while Ellis Sq. was fine, but again not as nice. There was nearby parking for both (large garage type parking) and I didn't see much difference. We'd definitely stay again at Planters Inn!

Whichever hotel you decide, be sure to eat dinner at the Pink House Restaurant next to the Planters Inn. Great place, wonderful atmosphere.

We've stayed at Staybridge Suites, Inn at Ellis Square and Hampton Inn on Bay. We liked all of them. They are all close to River Street and the historic area. We found them all to be clean, and the parking rates were comparable as parking was always in city lots.

We liked Staybridge Suites best because it had more character and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. We had my father-in-law with him and he had a motorized cart and they were very helpful in watching it for us.

I haven't stayed at Planter's Inn in Savannah, but we have stayed at the one in Charleston and it was wonderful.

Good luck, I don't think you'll go wrong with any of your choices. Do eat at the Pink House though as Kathleen suggested.

They are all good choices. They are all close to one another so one location is not better than the others. The Planter's Inn used to be my favorite (before the others were built). It faces a square (and would be quieter because of that, but the newer ones have good sound insulation). It's next to the Pink House and room service is from the Pink House. Parking is in a garage next door. Then they built the Hampton Inn and it became my favorite. Limited parking underneath in a garage or in the city garage across the street (next to the Pink House). Free breakfast that's better than most HI breakfasts. Then they built the Staybridge and the Holiday Inn Express. Both of those are good, with free breakfasts and new interiors built in old exterior shells but with good soundproofing, etc. All of those are a toss-up. They are equally good and parking is either free or a nominal fee. Parking should not be a huge concern because the Savannah visitor pass is $12 for 2 days and you can use street parking or the city garages - and there are two within blocks. The Inn at Ellis is the old Days Inn and another building that has the larger rooms. They have their own garage. It's my least favorite of the ones on the list but there's nothing wrong with it. It's just older. I don't think it includes a free breakfast. I've stayed at them all and would happily stay in any of them again. If your price point is higher, the Andaz or the new Brice hotel (a Kimpton hotel and the former Mulberry) are good choices too. The Savannah Planter's Inn is not by the Charleston Planter's Inn folks (not as luxury but still very nice). The Pink House is my favorite restaurant in Savannah and is good for lunch or dinner. Even if I don't eat there on a visit, I always go to the historic tavern in the basement and have a drink and an appetizer or dessert. If there's any chill at all, they will have a fire in the big fireplace and someone is usually playing on the grand piano. Just a fabulous place. Take a walking tour with Dirk of Savannah Rambles.

We like Planter's Inn in Savannah also and parking is available at a deck nearby. This hotel is not as upscale as the one in C'ton but very nice. They do a wine & cheese hour in late afternoon. The Pink House restaurant is not to be missed--if you like fish the flounder with apricot topping is fabulous.

Starrs-----what do you mean about the visitor pass?

Assuming your car will packed with more than just a suitcase. A secure garage would be a good idea.

ALL of them are in a good location for walking around.

They are virtually next to one another. Like pearls on a string, you can walk from one to another within a few strides.

"A Visitor DAYPASS allows limited parking in any City parking garage/lot, parking overtime in limited time zones or at any parking meter with a time limit of one hour or more for a period of 48 hours from purchase. The Visitor DAYPASS is available to Savannah visitors for a price of $12 for 2 days and $7 for a single day. "

Also, weekends and after work hours on work days = free parking on the street.

The parking pass is good for street parking and city garages. Basically, park anywhere in the city you want for $7/ day (or $6 if you buy a 2 day pass).
