“'nice try, but not quite what we're looking for' response."

I would tell them to look themselves if they're so darn particular.

The 20s somethings shouldn’t have a say in the matter. Have they ever treated anyone to a meal?

Whenever someone says "not quite what I'm looking for" then I say "what EXACTLY are you looking for?" Obviously if they think it isn't quite it, then they must have a very exact idea of what it is they are looking for. That is such a meaningless statement -- "not quite what we're looking for".

UES: Brasserie Julien is a good idea. What about Atlantic Grill? Or Sarabeth's at the Whitney?

Thanks for the additional ideas.

Planning a get together for a large group is not my idea of fun, but I said I'd help, so...
And yes, compromises will be made by all! The "nice try, but not quite what we're looking for" was definitely a paraphrase of a more thankful sounding response. The price range was a little limiting at first, and then the timing and locations were really narrowed down a little more, so I think there will be a winner in this group.

We chanced upon an amazing 3-course price fixe lunch in SoHo at Peep. Great Thai food and very cool ambience.

Wishing you luck and thick skin, Janie. If all else fails with the veggie folks, send them out to graze in Central Park.
