I'm looking for an excellent, reasonably priced (no more than 60$ per person) steakhouse in New York, aside from Peter Lugers. Thanks.

Wollensky's Grill on East 49th and 3rd Avenue. But I suggest eating in the bar (called the Grill as opposed to Smith and Wollensky's) which to me has more atmosphere than the big dining rooms.

Lots of people rave about Gallagher's, but we found the steaks tasteless and tough, and ended up with plates of "left-over" gristle.

I think Ben Bensons has some of the finest steaks! Also Sparks is great!

We've had enjoyable steak dinners at Spark's, Smith and Wollensky's, MarkJoseph, The Palm, The Old Homestead. These are the standbys that you usually find in discussions, but there are many more good steakhouses in NYC. There are debates on chowhound.com as to which restaurant is the best. Good luck!

Another vote for Spark's and The Palm.

A little known and VERY good steak place is called LAN on 3rd Ave at 11th St. It is owned by a company that also owns a meat packing co. It is part Japanese and part steak house. Highly recommended. (I live here) Not at all touristy and well priced.

Try The Strip House on West 12th Street - wonderful, rich ,and flavorsome steaks with the most decadent and delicious potatoes cooked in goose fat . you should be able to get out for $50-60 each as the portions are huge and sharing is easy.

I seconf the vote for wollensky's grill, I loved it before the remolding and haven't been back sine. I thought they turned the grill into a martini bar. If anyone knows please speak up as I used to love it there.
If you go ask for Francis he is a great waiter and if you have a dog he will bring you a bag of bones to die for.

Wollensky's Bar (or Grill) is the same food as in Smith and Wollensky's, but has a little lower prices and more atmosphere.

Thanks. Is it recommended to make reservations for Willensky's Grill and if so is it through the same number I'd call for Smith and Wollensky? Also, has anyone ever eaten at Ruth's Chris or Morton's. I hear they are also good. Thanks to all the respondants.

For some reason Wollensky's Grill rates a 21 despite the fact the food's the same as S&M.

Frank's that Flopmeister mentions rates a 20 for food, Wantsomesun's Lan gets a 22.

I've been to many of these Jack, and if there are any women in your party, I'd pick the Post House. IMO, it's the best combo of food and atmosphere.

We've had steaks at both MarkJoseph & also Peter Luger. Maybe it was an off night, but PL was nothing great. MarkJoseph was the best steak I've ever had in my life! (Peter Luger wins for the onion rolls, though.)
