Santa Monica - Food

I'll be in Santa Monica in February, staying near the beach/third street promenade. I'd love some restaurant recommendations. Quick bite or fine dining. Thanks!

Hi lui,
We ate 2 weeks ago at a restaurant called Jiraffe (look it up under LA restaurants). While it's not cheap, it is just wonderful for a nice night out. The food was outstanding, as was the service. The restaurant can be dress up or casual depending on your mood...there is no attitude there. Just a great place in every way if you enjoy excellent food and atmosphere...

I think I've eaten at most of Wolfgang Puck's places, but Chinois on Main remains tops in my book. A short distance from the 3rd Street promenade.

Ate at The Lobster on the beach last Saturday night. It was near 3rd St. but can't remember the address. Pricey but the lobster and service were great. Very non-stuffy atmosphere, too, and the place was packed. I'd go back there in a minute.

Hey Lui/ We're 'locals'. Have gotten some great tips on this over the years myself, so hope this helps

Great spot on the Promenade called Locanda del Lago or "Lago"/Great N. Italian; lively ,med + prices, great service. The famous "Chez Jay"; upscale,dive-y type place. Full of local Hollywood lore. Basic good seafood, steaks, etc. Heavy pour on the drinks. OUTRAGEOUS Chinese Seafood Place a bit west on WIlshire called"Royal Star Seafood". Variety, quality, etc and ALWAYS lots of Chinese people eating there which is always a good sign. BIG open dining room; great buzz. Lots of movie star sightings here for some reason.

The "Lobster" is terrific. delicious food. great view,Chatty bar patrons. Can get pricey.

"Rae's" diner on Pico. Jammed always/great breakfast spot. you know the place; hilarious waitresses, etc.

Have fun!

Two restaurants, both on Ocean Ave right across from the beach, a couple of blocks from the prom.
Ocean Avenue Seafood- focus on American Regional fresh Seafood.
I Cugini Trattoria- excellent Italian with a focus also on seafood. Great apps and wine list too. One of my favorites.
Both have beautiful patios with excellent views of the water. Go at sunset. Both are mid-range to fine dining in price.

Thank you, my Santa Monica friends. Now that we are on the topic, apparantly I got the last room left in town, when I booked the other day (The American Film Market in February is a killer). Please tell me that Hotel Shangri-La isn't a complete dump! I know its no Shutters, but what can I do?

Here are 4 reviews of the Shangri-La - 2 are good, 2 are not. I think you will be fine - the location is great and you'll love the weather.

Try the Reel Inn on the Promenade and for a snack Benita's french fries are there too!! There's a Crocodile Cafe within walking distance.
