I am a former Sd resident. I am sure others will respond but I don't think this is at all a good area, with or without a car. I am unsure of how you would plan to stay in La Jolla or travel there without a car. La Jolla is a lovely area, not at all remote. On the beach, very scenic, nice shopping, and great restaurants. I do not know what your plans are while visiting S.D but unless you are at a hotel that provides transportation to the surrounding attractions, (Sea World, Zoo,etc.) you will need a car. If you change hotels, and stay in the Gaslight district, or Mission Valley, the hotels may provide transportation. I hope others who live there now will respond with more input for you. Good luck. Enjoy.

Cancel Pacific Hwy not a good place to be. If you don't have a car and want to be at the beach I would recommed the Catamaran Hotel, right on the bay and one block from the beach, close to restaurants or La Jolla, which you could walk around to everything. In La Jolla La Valencia(very expensive) or Empress Hotel on Fay Ave close walk to every thing. You can email me if you have anything you want to ask me.

without a car you may want to consider a hotel in the downtown area. there is a bus system that goes around the city stopping at some of the major attractions. you can get on & off the bus as often as you want during the day.
the catamaran is a nice hotel in pacific beach. great location if you enjoy walks along the beach and it also has the bay right there which is peaceful to walk around. it is an area with a much younger crowd then say la jolla.
la jolla is lovely but without a car, i 'd find it inconvenient after a couple of days. depending upon your walking abilities, it is a bit of a hike up from the ocean to the "downtown/restaurant" area. not long, only a block or sout it is a steep hike. no problem for most people but some elderly people find it difficult.
if you want more suggestions, give us your budget? renting a car makes everything more convenient in san diego. the road system is very good and not scary if that's what is holdin you back. but, my folks don't drive and they've always managed to get around town. just takes a while as the public transportation isn't the greatest.
