San Francisco visitors - is the city difficult to navigate?

I'm asking because I just saw a couple... maybe early 50s, with a book "San Francisco for dummies" standing on Market street with such a forlorn expression on their faces!

Now, if you have a book, how difficult is it to find a place in the city?

LOL Faina, did you stop and help them? I think any city to a new comer is confusing. But I didn't know there was a "San Franciso for Dummies". Is this really true?

LoveItaly, sometimes I AM serious... yes, this was the name of the book!

And no, I couldn't help as I was in a MUNI bus, it stopped at a red light so I had time to see the name of the book clearly.

Here it is, 336 pages. No, this is not advertising. I Googled.

You know, we, dummies, come in all shapes and sizes

Yes, because streets start from 0 where they start, not e/w/n/s of a mythical or real Main street. There is either no grid system, or several, depending on how you percieve it.

I'm buying Kauai for Dummies.

I always help any person looking at a map and pointing in SF. I have received the return favor in Chicago, NYC and Paris.
Karma...it's not just for apples.

At 4AM last New Years Day, some guy started yelling to me across the street at Mission and Third, "hey is this Eddy, is this Eddy?".

How would you explain to a half-drunk guy on New Years Day how to get from Mission and Third to Eddy? I told him to cross Market Street and just keep walking till he ran into it. Why he wanted to go to Eddy at 4AM I don't know.

LOL Kal, I told you that your actions would be caught and discussed in depth on Fodors at some point! Didn't I?

Sequoia, you certainly did SF a public service directing our Kal to Eddy Street. Good for you!!
