san francisco - one night - any price
Would like to take my husband to San Francisco for just one night for his birthday. Would like a really nice hotel - small and elegant to the large mega complexes. Any ideas? Price not a problem as it is a special birthday.

Are you bed and breakfast type people? Perhaps the top of the list should be the tiny and exclusive Sherman House where people like Elizabeth Taylor stay. Small and over the top elegant.
While San Francisco has some wonderful big hotels, they're still just big hotels -- sort of like being at a convention. I'd go for the inspirational!!!
Next choice would be doing the concierge floor at The Ritz Carlton on Nob Hill.

Thanks Patrick - The Sherman House looks nice - would like to stay in a place that we can have dinner too. Have you eaten in their restaurant? Is this the kind of place we can just park the car and not move to go out to dinner etc. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

jr.....The Huntington Hotel is across from the Mark Hopkins and istruly an intimate hotel.Get a Specialty Suite,my personal preference is for a Park View. Each suite is 712sf and individually decorated and runs about $760 per night. The restauramt is wonderful as well.It will be a remarkable experience..........S

No, haven't eaten at The Sherman House. To be honest, I didn't even know they had a restaurant. And I've never stayed there. I only know about it because we rented an apartment for a month on Filmore, that sort of backed up to the Sherman House. From our terrace (second floor) we could see into their "private" gardens.
There are some very good restaurants quite close, but nothing that is what you'd normally call an "event" dining experience, unless it is at the Sherman House itself.
Another thought is a really nice suite at the Washington Square Inn (I think that's the right name). It overlooks the park, and almost right downstairs is the wonderful Moose's -- a sort of jazz supper club that really makes for a wonderful evening, and you're in the heart of North Beach for strolling, coffees, desserts, drinks, whatever.
