I need to book a hotel in San Fran in mid October for a Thurs to Mon stay for 3 people that are 23, 23 and 27.
Can someone please recomend what part of San Fran I should be looking in?

Union Square has good proximity to shopping, China Town, and a modest walk to the terminal and piers.

Fisherman's Wharf hotels are closer to the water, tourist laden, cable cars, walking distance to Ghiradelli Square and Pier 39 shopping. Closer to the bridge and the ferry terminal

Both areas have abundant restaurant options.

Are you there to shop or tour?

We love the Rex in Union Square which was recommended to us by son and GF who stayed there and loved it. (Both were in mid and late 20s when they were there in '06).

As a San Franciscan, my favorite hotel based on location is the Hilton Financial District. I have to admit I haven't been there since it changed from Holiday Inn to Hilton, so I can't vouch for the rooms etc.

But as far as location, it's on the edge of North Beach, Jackson Square, Chinatown, a short walk to the Embarcadero, a short walk to Market Street and public transportation hubs, a slighly longer short walk to Union Square, etc. And if you get a north facing room on an upper floor, the view is spectacular.

Also, you're not surrounded by hotels, which for me is a plus.

I'm "several" years older than they are, but Cow Hollow is crawling with trendy 20 somethings. You don't say what kind of accomodation they are looking for or the price. Cow Hollow Motor Inn on Lombard in the heart of the shops, restaurants, and bars of Cow Hollow is a real bargain with large, well kept, simple rooms. And it has the wonderful bonus of free indoor parking if they are driving or if they have a car.

ITA with Patrick on the Cow Hollow/ Lombard street properties. I stayed one of the sister hotels to Cow Hollow Suites, Coventry Inn. Also has covered parking and an easy 3 block walk to Union Street (not Union Square), with lots of shops and dining options. My 23 year old daughter gets her hair cut at a nice salon there.

I just looked at your other query and I think the Hilton will probably be outside their budget. They may be more likely to find something in the Cow Hollow area in their budget, but I'm not sure it fits the bill as "cool"; depends on your definition. By New York standards, that area is more like the Upper West Side than the Lower East Side (the latter being what I'd think of as cool, but what do I know?).

They may like staying at the Stanyon Park Hotel, which is on the edge of the Haight Ashbury. It's a clean, fairly reasonable hotel, and the neighborhood is probably higher on the "cool" scale (and there are several public transportation options). Not much nightlife in the Haight, though, except for a couple of spots on Cole Street. But it sounds like their nights may all be taken care of.
